I had a few photos in my Ideabook. 12" of floor looks useful. I like the second vanity with legs, which helps make it look less like a tight corner.

It looks like one side of the vanity is against a wall. If so, I would go with a 42 or 45 inch vanity and keep the one end against the wall. That will give you more space beside the toilet to clean around the toilet base and just look more open. I have a nice garbage container on that side of my vanity, beside the toilet which is useful.

I like the idea of smaller vanity and space on each side of the vanity. That 12" space could be used for a hall tree to hang towels. Or a small moveable stool to sit, instead of using the toilet lid.

The largest vanity that still allows at least 36" for the toilet. To me, space around the toilet is priority, though I do prefer the toilet next to a wall.

Did you consider just installing a shower? If I was adding a rarely used guest bathroom I'd probably just go with a shower.

Thanks, all. I'm still really torn and probably overthinking this way too much! A 48" leaves 36" for the toilet, so no problems there. I feel like there will be room for towel hooks or a bar on the opposite wall, so that's not really a factor. I don't want the vanity to dwarf the space, and I'll definitely get one with feet. I'm not sure where extra towels will go, I'll probably need to make space for them in the vanity, so that's an argument for a bigger one, I guess.

Benjesbride, just a shower was our original plan, but we decided there's a chance we might end up bathing kids there -- the only other tub is a clawfoot in the master.

I'd go with the 48", but if you don't, I think it would look fine if you don't attach it to the adjacent wall. You can use the space for a waste basket and a towel ring on the aide of the vanity.

Do you ever have more elderly guests who would use the guest room? I ask because a tub is more difficult to get in and out of. If not, go with the tub because of the kids but if you do have older guests using that bathroom, go with a shower.

Perhaps leave space for a trash can- seems like they always get shoved into odd spots in bathrooms. I like mine under the sink, but I don't know anyoen else who does that lol.

I'm only about 20 pounds overweight, but I detest being squeezed between the tub and the vanity when using the toilet. If I were a large man, this would be even more of an issues for me! Space is a good thing!!!

mayflowers, I think wall-hung is a bit has more of a contemporary vibe than we want, we're going for more of a cottage feel. But I think I will sacrifice a bit of storage space for the sake of longer vanity legs, so the space will hopefully still feel open.

cpartist, this is actually a dilemma for us...our parents, who are currently in their mid-60s, will probably stay a few times a year. No mobility problems yet, but it is something to keep in mind. I know that guests, even younger ones, would probably prefer just a nice big shower in there. But since we don't live in the house yet, it's hard to guess whether or not we'll be happy bathing the kids in the clawfoot in the master (or having that be the only place in the house for them to take baths, if they're so inclined, when they're older). And some of our occasional guests will be my sisters, who have small kids themselves, and might welcome a spot to bathe them without having to worry about invading our privacy? Unfortunately, there's no way for us to add a tub to the kids' bathroom because of space and plumbing constraints (we're actually ripping out this shallow corner monstrosity that's currently in there).

I'm definitely planning on grab bars, though, and plan to look for a tub that doesn't have too high of a step-over.

You know, I actually really like my 12" or so gap, I have a rectangular hamper in mine. But only if the smaller vanity can hold what you need, being a guest bath I'm sure it can though. It's slightly akward to sweep but not a big deal.

With the shower thought, most kids I know are as content with jumping in the shower with mum or dad as they are having a bath. As babies, both my kids preferred it and my 3 year old hasn't stopped and is starting to have her own shower time.

I am getting rid of the only bathtub in my house and every time I post about my bathroom plans, someone has to tell me how wrong I am to do it. I don't have much choice, though. It is either that or move, and I would rather add a bathroom with tub to the basement for new buyers before selling than move now, after we have everything else in the house done. So, due to all the grief I get, I agree with you about putting the tub in your guest bath!

One option for your cabinetry would be to get the shorter vanity,36", then get a narrow tower next to it for the towels. It could be a full cabinetry tower, or maybe an open one that is more of an etagere.

Nancy, my in laws removed their only tub and were able to sell very quickly. They planned to ad a combo tub shower back if they found they could not sell it. Do what you want and worry later if there is a problem selling.
