Help...it looks like I can't take out the whole soffit! (Pics)
Comments (14)Beck, I think the fridge wall looks fine and you can hide the soffit or not as you please, no matter what you do on the other wall. In fact, I think the whole thing will look fine. I like your small cabinets up on the range wall. If you can really make them line up with the bottom of the soffit, it seems to me that the best thing to do is to do false doors on the soffit, especially if you can take it out over the sink. If the cabinets have visible frames, put them on too, so that it really looks like the same top level cabinets. You could also just paint the soffits to match the cabinets. I wouldn't do the angle/window wall soffit in wall color, because that will emphasize the step down. Either way, you could do something different on the fridge wall pretty easily. I'm a fan of clean lines, so I don't want to gunk it up, but another thing you could do is an angled lattice that matches the beading on the stiles and rails, on the soffits. Or hang a light sculpture. Or clad them with stainless to match the appliances. I mean, there are all kinds of things you could do, but the best way to carry your design all the way around, I think, is to run the cupboards up. I have a weird soffit with pipes in my current laundry and pantry. It's just going to get enclosed in the new cupboards and go away. :)...See MoreHood, cabinet, soffit issue....can't figure this out
Comments (13)I like your Houzz inspiration. I think it looks good because they've used a wide crown molding to minimize the blank space of the soffit. Would that work on the sink wall soffit too? Then I'd use a chimney hood with a wide chimney. Some are just too long and skinny, and that's going to be accentuated by your tall and narrow cabinets--three in a row! I'd also bring the window treatment up to the crown as shown in the photo, though I bet your soffit interferes with that. Or I'd add the large top molding on the window as shown in the photo with the red range. You want to create the illusion of taller windows. I think all that brings a cohesive look to the soffits, windows, cabinets, and hood. I wonder if someone with great spatial abilities could find a way to make both walls look like they were designed as a whole. The Home Decor forum might be helpful with that, but maybe moreso the Remodeling and Building a Home forums, which have some really talented posters. Post everywhere! You've been struggling with this a long time!...See MorePlease review my cabinet design options and soffit or no soffit?
Comments (7)I prefer simpler, cleaner lines, so mostly like the 2nd styles in each drawing. I especially like the area next to the pantry to have more counter and not have the long doors down to the counter. Also, in the first picture, that area next to the oven and pantry looks like it's trying to be a furniture piece, but everything on that wall looks like separate things all shoved together. I'm not sure how to explain that better, and less offensively! I just think there is a lot going on and, like I said, all lined up, shoulder-to-shoulder, doesn't work for me. How do you do soffits with the cabinets changing height at the top? Or would you do away with that? If you drop the ceiling in the butler's pantry, might you want to do cabinets to 9 ft and have the ceiling where the cabinets end? Or do you want to store serveware or have lighting above?...See MoreHow to decorate kitchen soffits above cabinets
Comments (9)Don't paint a vine with flowers on them. That will suck value from any resale you want to do. DH just had to pay to get his ex wife's taste in murals removed so the house would sell. Do you have a photo of your soffits? We have something similar. We put crown molding up there and it looks very elegant....See MoreTamar Paz
