Pecan Orchard
Comments (4)al August is best time to start renovating old orchard. Best book out there is Pecan Production In The Southeast a guide for growers. Last thrusday in August south carlonia has pecan field day use county agent for more info updates. Pecan field days all good to go to in my past I've been to many. You need clean orchard floor this month down to bear ground sod middles ok to leave but mowed. I like orchard clean ground with just pecantree grass does all things bad for trees. In August is best time to apply nitgeon for old trees not young but best time for old trees you see old trees are to slow to do bad things with nitgeon this time year all it do is make fruiting buds larger in february when buds swell they be big. This inturn make more pecans per cluster 7 nuts is amount you want. Don't start your orchard renovating until you ready to give 5 years to orchard the tree to slow just pick up in 1 or 2 years 5th year harvest will be as large as get if 1st 2sec 3 third 4 th are done right. Nut size this year go up to double size and number nuts per cluster increase until 5th year. I've seen to many people give one season to old tree give up. first year leaves be bigger on lower part tree second year growth go about half way limbs third year it get to top limbs crop increase third year by noticeable amount. Next go to county agents office stay half day to get information. Go talk to buyer now Youg Pecan company is biggest buyer in south carolina they have collector around you (buyers). You going to run into a lot info about taking care your pecan orchard nitgeon and zinc most important iron next then your tree be ready for leaf sample in july 2015 they be no good to you until then if plant new tree this winter they be good next july. Cleaning an orchard works best at labor day so no weed come up after that date Till only 3 inches deap in orchard feeder roots close to top soil. Nuts fill with water called water stage july till august 10th, Nuts size up in june bigger better. Don't forget field day it be trip to good orchard learn termal growth I like 8 inches for good nut set....See MoreSouth Carolina
Comments (13)If you come through Spartanburg, check out Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve. It's not that big, so it doesn't take that long to tour, but has several picnic areas, so is a nice place to have lunch and only 2 miles off I-26 after taking I-26-East off I-85 (Follow I26-East about 5miles to the 3rd exit, Reidville Rd., S.C. 296), then you turn left, and it's 2.2 miles on the left. If you're taking 85 to Clemson, anyway, I see no reason to not make the little sidetrip and see where I spend some time volunteering. The only sad part is the streams aren't running right now as they're doing some water-garden renovation over the winter and I had a tour there Sunday and it looked nowhere near finished, but it's still nice, with winter jasmine, winter honeysuckle, Peggy Clarke flowering apricot and witch hazel all in bloom there right now (all four of those are in bloom in my yard, only about a 1.5 miles from Hatcher, right now, too, but only one of the four came from there, lol). I'll post the link to make it easier, if you're interested. Hope you enjoy your trip! Comments (124)Hey mountaineergirl! Glad to know I'm not the only one from "Almost Heaven West Virginia!" I'm from the big city of Charleston -- fourth generation (at least); went off to college in central Kentucky, seminary on Boston's North Shore, honeymooned across America with everything I owned in a UHaul truck to settle in Los Angeles for 4 years, then came back east, inside the Capital Beltway in Maryland for 6 years, then finally home again, home again to Charlie West. Like Dorothy said, "There's no place like home!"...See MoreMysteries--desperate for recommendations
Comments (103)Thank you. This thread has kept me from the gardening and a possible bee sting. I see many old favorites and more exciting, new authors to try. One of my favorites not listed is Robert Van Gulik, Dutch, world reknown expert on China, son of a diplomat I believe and wrote about Judge Dee in the Tang dynasty. Warning, one book has descriptive scene - 'drawn & quartered' for a mean malevolent being. Was Nevada Barr mentioned? Her lonely ranger, Anna Pigeon, works in the natl. parks. Rarely have physical locales' descriptions stayed with me as strongly. I can still go back to the depths of Lake Superior or the Anasazi cliff dwellings. Perhaps a bit on the dark side....See MoreMountain MT Homes LLC
