Confused as to your question? If sheltering it as a houseplant, of course you can grow it. It may not be extremely amenable to that, and yes, it would need some degree of coolness in winter but not actual chilling per se.

Outside? Dave in Nova might know more about this one, he might have tried to grow it. But in my opinion, zone 7a in NJ, no, far safer to grow the hybrid Osmanthus X fortunei.

There are a number of Osmanthus varieties that should do well in the upper reaches of zone 7a. As davidrt28 mentions, Osmanthus x fortunei should be OK for you. It blooms for a few weeks in late Fall (amazing fragrance, but not quite as wonderful as O. fragrans). Other selections that should be hardy include heterophyllus, americanus, armatus, x burkwoodii, and maybe more, but they are obscure and difficult to find.

But to your question about O. fragrans...some are growing it outdoors here in Northern VA in zone 7a, but with shelter and in shade. Expect a bit of dieback occasionally during really bad winters or throw a tarp over it during severe cold outbreaks. It would probably do well in a pot provided you had a cool room in winter and placed it outdoors in part shade in spring after chance of frost is past.

Osmanthus fragrans grown in a pot (in a protected environment), would prefer a coolish winter environment..., thinking a "three-season room" or such. Outdoors, not sure it would survive long term in Zone 7. Otherdoors, Osmanthus heterophyllus "goshiki" is readily available in NJ. (and in my own experience a more robust grower, but not as aromatic).

Ok well I'm looking for a non-hybrid one like the aurantiancus one. And I am looking for a permanent houseplant that is native to Japan. I've already got fatsia on my list.

Many of the "houseplants" that may be available that have a connection to Japan, will do better in winter homes that are not excessively warm. Some that come to mind are..., Pittosporum tobira, Podocarpus macrophyllus, Fatsia japonica, Cycas revoluta (not easy as a houseplant), loquat (Eriobotrya japonica), and Camellia japonica, and I'm sure there are others.

Nice list! I will look into them. And I've been looking at loquat too but many people are saying it won't fruit when grown as a houseplant, even in full sun windows. My current home(my dads house technically) I'm living in is like 60 degrees all the time inside the house if thats cool enough

That is cold enough by my thin blood! No, the loquat will most likely not bloom inside, but the leaves are quite nice and it does quite well inside (also EASY from SEED). They will survive in a NJ Zone 7ish climate and i used to overwinter mine in the ground..., but now, i have DEER and deer seem to love a lot of "Japanese" plants outside (loquats, Fatsia, Euonymous japonica! Camellia is strangely ignored outside, as is Osmanthus of any species. Also, how are we defining "Japanese" plants? Some plants really, REALLY popular in Japan now, were NEVER native to Japan (Lady palms, Clivia, etc.).

Oh if they won't produce fruits then theres no point in getting them. Yea I'm going to get a fatsia as a houseplant this spring but will keep it indoors all year long so no deer :) When I mean Japanese, I mean plants being native to Japan. Not being popular. Although I consider diospyros, yuzu, and satsuma mandarin Japanese even though they were originally native to china.

MANY species of "Japanese" flora originated out of China, so, not sure why you are making exceptions for some.

Actually, another plant comes to mind..., Kumquats (Fortunella) , I believe are Japanese and do better indoors than true Citrus.

Well ever since I was little, I've always had the impression that persimmon, yuzu, and satsuma mandarins were japanese fruits since we use them very often. Most other people also refer to these fruits as japanese instead of chinese. And if you look at their names, diospyros kaki: kaki is a Japanese word for persimmon. Yuzu is a Japanese word and is commonly called yuzu instead of a chinese name. The word Satsuma in satsuma mandarin is also Japanese. These are all common names for these plants and they are in Japanese instead of Chinese for some reason. I guess it had to do with the Japanese cultivating it more in their land and making use of these fruits better than China did. Don't know the exact history

Many of the fruits you mention have been 'cultivated' in Japan for millenia. But that doesn't make them native. You should invest in a book about native plants of Japan! I haven't looked for one, but am sure there are many out there.

I think Akebia vine is native to Japan.
