Oh, I'm so happy for you, Kathsgrdn!! Yes, this was definitely the right move as our bodies can only take so much for so long. A relative of mine was a surgical nurse for many years, back when they had to lift patients on and off the table. Her shoulder gave her trouble for the rest of her life, though she did find some relief. I'll bet your ankle will heal up quickly after you're able to get off of it. Congratulations!!

Working on a Med-Surge unit is brutal. So glad that you'll be doing a job less taxing on the body. I've been dealing with an ankle issue for over a year and it's really painful when I have to be on ny feet. I can't imagine having to do a 12 hr shift on it.

Congratulations! I just got my cast off my ankle and am struggling with pain as I re-learn to walk. You did the right thing.

Telephone care? Is that something like advise nurse? I've used advice nurse for my mother more than once at her clinic, certainly is great having a calm knowledgeable voice to tell me if she needs to be seen or if there are self help steps that can correct whatever is going on...

Congratulations on the job, maybe you can tell us more about it when you have a chance. Can you elevate while doing phone care? My OB-gyn broke the heck out of her ankle one year, rushing out in the middle of the night to deliver a baby, took a misstep on her way to her car. For many months, she would see patients in her office while elevating her foot, no apologies ;0)

Thanks everyone. Telephone care is answering calls and then directing them to where they need to go, ER or their primary care doctor, etc... Only bad thing is I will have to buy real work clothes now. Yikes! I have two nice pair of pants but they are really tight. Was hoping to do a lot of walking and hiking but that is how I sprained my ankle and I have been gaining weight. I don't usually wear anything but jeans and t-shirts...and tennis shoes. Will have to find some comfortable shoes (or shoe lol) since I will probably be in the boot for a while.

I did the same kind if care when I worked in a very large medical clinic. I loved it.

Congratulation on landing a different job. Hopefully, it will be better suited to preserving your ankles and feet, and possibly your sanity.

One cautionary note: Being on your feet 12 hours a day is a form of weight control. If your new job is more of a sit down, adjust your schedule to include some physical activity, else you'll gain weight and get out of shape. Once that has happened, it tougher to deal with than preventing it in the first place.

That is so great to hear! A desk job coming when you hurt yourself and need to rest? That sounds like perfect timing.

The VA has been working hard to improve its public image and avoid bad publicity. I'd guess they don't tell anyone to "take two aspirin and call back next week".

Congratulations, Kat. Hope you are able to rest that ankle now. I also had a sprained ankle for about a year. It would swell up and turn purple. They take a long time to heal. I went to the ortho doc, physical therapy, used the boot, prescribed ointments and still had pain. What really worked for me (when nothing else would) was staying off the foot, wrapping it with the sports tape and the thing called light relief. It had gotten so bad that the stabbing pains would wake me out of a deep sleep. I still wrap it up with the pink sports tape every morning before I start the day and it feels almost normal now. Oh, and I found a pair of really comfortable shoes. Just my two cents, lol. Good wishes to you.
