Odd plant growing in backyard

Richard Hardiman

A strange plant started growing in my backyard (in Northern Sydney Australia) and I was intrigued by the exotic look of it. Pretty soon it started fruiting with little egg shaped pods after mauve/pink flower. I have been looking everywhere for it but have had no luck. The fruit is now yellow orange and some have turned nearly red. The fruit smell a little like capsicum when broken open. I opened one of the most ripe/colourful fruits and once discarded I noticed a young bush turkey running around with it in it's beak, which leads me to believe it may be edible. I have attached two photos in the hope someone will recognise this oddity.
