Resource guarding is not uncommon. The problem right now is that you do not yet know exactly what these particular dogs consider a resource. Food or treats are often considered resources, but sometimes a certain toy, or chair, or even the attention of the owner can be a resource.

There is the possibility of future dog aggression, and you may want to consider whether it is wise to leave them together if you leave the house, at least for now.

I wouldn't EVER give them rawhide chew toys. There are other things you can use that will not cause that kind of response.

I, too, think that your pictures of those two are simply wonderful.

They have the pack mentality already with their lying on top of each other. And probably you too! They look so contented.

My vet had me discontinue giving raw hide to my dogs. He had performed so many surgeries due to the raw hide not digesting and causing blockages. He said the only type he had not had problems with were the sticks that were made of pressed together bits of raw hide. They come apart into very small pieces that will pass through the digestive track.

I used to get my Danes these pig ears which were apparently tasty and did break down easily.

Well they're just tiny bite sized ones. I only give them to the dogs when I need some alone time & it keeps them busy for awhile.

You should Google the dangers of rawhide, the toxic chemicals involved in processing the cow hides are dangerous. I know you want them to have chew things but go with the ones that are safe and healthy. Be careful of products from China too there have been deaths associated with dog treats from China.

I lost one of my precious kitties due to the food I gave him, only once, but it caused kidney failure. This was a few years ago when so many pets died from the pet foods containing a dangerous chemical. I feel guilt every day. That's one reason I am so careful with the things I chose for Mia now.

Have you tried Himalayan chew sticks? My dd's small dog works on them from time to time and doesn't make much headway, but seems to enjoy them. They're a little pricey though, if your dogs chomp them down. Check DogFoodAdvisor forums to read about them. (I can't cut and past the url with firefox--frustrating.)

When I wanna keep mine occupied pawprint, I go for the old standby, a Kong toy filled with peanut butter. Or squeeze cheese from a can. Guaranteed to keep their attention for awhile.

Yes I agree rawhide is not safe. Once when Lily was sick the vet suspected a blockage, (it wasnt) but the first thing he ask was do you give her rawhide. Its like playing russian roulette with the dog, that's the vets words.

I don't trust the leather/rawhide type chew toys, even the chunked up ones. You just don't know what's in them.

When you have two healthy feisty male dogs, never hand out a single treat. That's a setup for a tussle. Make sure both dogs get a treat at the same time, and even that is not insurance there will not be test for dominance.

Dog fights, even if just short arguments, are scary... especially between LARGE dogs. Had 2 Rotties years ago... totaled close to 200 lbs. They naturally played very rough.... remember a time when they tipped over the SOFA in play!! Maybe 2-3 times total, one got a little to rough and the other took offense... probably the smaller, BETA dog... I considered myself the alpha;)

Same goes for territory as a fighting point. Went to SILs house years ago with a Dobie. They had a shepherd/husky mix and both dogs got along famously. The husky mix had a playful habit of nosing the back of my head... a quick jump and bump. Well, my dog took offense to that for some reason. BUT it wasn't her yard! Brief snarliing and lots of white teeth showing, but they didn't hurt each other. My dog learned it was NOT her yard that day and they never "fought" again>

Max is a resource guarder. He guards resources that are not even his and he is not involved in LOL. For example, if DD is eating popcorn (we do NOT share with the dogs. Meanies ;) and Cooper walks by, Max will come flying out teeth blazing and making the most gad awful sounds! You would think it was a full on dog fight, but it's just the noises he makes.

He is a little pug, but he will snarl and snap at the big lab mix. Usually there might be a bark back and maybe some teeth as a "you are being rude to me" correction. But it sounds terrible and startles me every time.

Max started this when we got Cooper, but that is what Ruby used to do to him so that is where he learned it. Sigh.
