What is eating my lettuce and carrot seedlings?
I am relatively new to Arizona.
For the past few weeks, I've been having problems with something
eating my romaine lettuce seedlings. Whatever it is eats them very
fast. There have been three different occasions now where I've looked
at the garden and then revisited the garden an hour or two hours later
and the leaves are gone from the lettuce seedlings (about a week or so
after sprouting). The stems are hardly ever eaten.
This past week the getting carrot seedlings have been popping up as well
and the tips of the leaves have been getting nipped off by whatever it
is (I can only presume).
This always seems to happen during the day and usually when it is sunny.
It should also be noted that I have an almost full-grown oak lettuce
transplant and asparagus right next to those rows that never seem to be
damaged at all.
Thinking it might have been some sort of insect, I have been spraying
the garden with neem oil. However, this is not helping.
If anyone has ever had the same problem and knows what it is (and maybe
what to do), let me know.
I should also mention that it is a raised garden in a fenced in backyard.

Comments (3)Peter, I have the very same thing happening now with my Lollo Rosso Red head lettuce, yesterday I got the same thing when I barely tried to move the dead leaves, I noticed the middle leaves were good, but the plant came up in my hands so easily and when I checked for root there was none, and there was no innder stem, just a frame, some some sucker ate it up. Comments (2)I haven't ruled the inside job out just yet. Though there's been 2 weeks since the last heist was pulled. I'm suspicious about the back corner under the bench. Now I have to make time and get down under there and lift a board or two and see if I can find tunneling. Comments (2)As a transplant from the mid-west to the Pacific Northwest I've learned some of the signs of snails/slugs. We got doozies here in the NW! I suggest you grab a flashlight about an hour or two after dark and closely inspect the garden. They are elusive critters but if you see any of these slimy creatures you can place, near the veggies, an empty cottage cheese container with a hole cut in the lid 1/2 filled with beer to collect those near the garden. (These "beer party-ers" get drunk and drown!) Also Cory's has an effective and safe Snail/Slug product you can purchase and sprinkle just outside the drip line. You also can put a few tablespoons of the bait in a plastic pop bottle placed on it's side near the lettuce & basil. You should be able to find Cory's at your local WMart or garden center.
