My aloe pups won't grow... please help

I've had my aloe for about a year and a half and it's doing great. About twice a year I remove it's pups. I've noticed the pups that I've re-potted aren't really growing. I've had some of these pups for a year and they just won't grow. They look alright. I guess more than anything they are just maintaining as they are, no change one way or another. I've searched all over the Internet for advice but can't find anything specif to non growing pups. They get the same amount of sun as the mother plant as well as the same soil type. (Regular miracle grow potting soil). I wait until the soil is completely dry and then give them a good watering. They are all indoor plants so cold weather isn't an issue.

Please help! My mother plant is absolutely amazing and I want my pups to one day have the potential to be the same. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Maybe wait a little longer before removing them from the mother, so they have a better-established root system?

Err sorta like the above poster, why are you removing them? A clump looks better imo.

Do I understand that the second picture you posted shows me that the Cassia was planted before patio construction, all the rock work was piled on top of any spreading root growth and a square opening was left in the patio above the original soil line so the tree was not disturbed? If so, as mentioned above, your tree is fighting to to develop root growth in a compressed soil. Also, you show examples of other plantings in the patio. Were those holes just left as open squares which you filled in with soil as each was planted? You may in time experience a change in soil pH as new concrete leaches lime for many years which is harmful to plants. Cassia is a fast grower which should be reaching for the sun. Frankly, I would end the guessing game. Two thoughts: Every time you water use a liquid fertilizer at 1/4 strength. Or, purchase a new Cassia and install with good draining soil so that the top of the root ball is level with the patio surface. Perhaps you can accomplish the same purpose by digging out the original tree. Worth a try.

tammypie--I bought my forsythia at my local nursery/garden center. I assume the same should be true for your area. Certainly, any online nursery that sells a variety of shrubs, perennials, etc., should carry forsythia. You might check and see if it needs some winter cold in order to bloom. I don't know about that--since I get winter cold whether I want it or not. Otherwise, they are the easiest things in the world to grow, but give them space and in a somewhat out-of-the-way place. They can get big; unfortunately, they don't do much after they finish their early, early spring bloom--but when all the world is clothed in winter drab, they are a welcome spot of yellow sunshine promising us spring will follow. Well it's been some time now, and our Ae-Ae bananas are starting to turn ripe. We've tasted a couple of them at various stages of "ripeness", but they're still not ready. So far, they taste a little like a manzana banana -- an apple flavor -- but still not good. We'll let them get more ripe and see if that helps in the sweetness department. Manzanas taste best when fully ripe and when the fruit is getting soft -- actually they're good when the skin starts to turn brown. Maybe the Ae-Ae is the same way. We'll find out. Here's a photo showing both the green and yellow/ripe variegated still on the plant. It's interesting how the green part turns "banana yellow" and the white part turns a light cream color.

Do you remember what cultivars or varieties you got? Some types like Dwarf Korean Lilacs only grow to 4 or 5 feet max. Have you been fertilizing regularly? If they are not dwarf varieties, and since they are getting plenty of sun and water, I suggest going back to whomever sold them to you and see if they have any ideas on what might be wrong.

Is your plant an Aloe vera, or another Aloe plant? Either way, you should let the pups get to a good size before removing them. Recommendations for size will vary, but larger pups seem to fare better.

This is an Aloe vera that is 2 feet tall and surrounded by pups. I just removed and shared the pups with neighbors. Some were 18 inches tall, but most were 10-12 inches tall.

Now that's not to say the small pups won't make it. It just takes them a lot longer. This guy is in a 3 inch pot. He fell off during a repot and is probably 6-8 months old in this picture.

I should mention that all of my plants are outside all year long, so I know that makes a difference in growth. Also, I grow my plants in a gritty mix like you see in the second picture.

And as mentioned above, some Aloes look better in a clump - A. 'Crosby's Prolific'

dbarron They get removed so that they can be propagated into a new plant. Some people like to make additional plants from their main plant, so that they can have them in several places in the house, or give them away as gifts, without having to purchase additional plants.

This is old thread, 3yrs old. And I don't think op ever returned (unless under new name?) - didn't answer any questions, or posted again...

Regardless, pups could have been removed too early - twice a year sounds very often; or there was another problem - doesn't matter why op was removing them...
