Hedge suffering/dying

Ive been at a place where i have a well established hedge which acts as a Screen from a main road .part of the hedge is suffering / poor foilage but gets the same amount of sun and water as the healthy part .can someone tell me what is up with the hedge and possible fixes i can try ?? You will notice on branches trunk there are large white spots which I'm guessing is some form of desease. Could the mulch have caused this ? But i think the problem was there before mulch was refreshed

Hate to say, but those shrubs have all but gone to God. Can't really tell what shrub/tree they actually are. Would be helpful to have a closeup of the remaining healthy leaves. Mulching with fresh eucalyptus chips can affect the health of plants but you would expect they would all have been looking the same if this was the cause. If they are Acacias, then it would be normal for them to pass on as these plants have a lifespan of around 7-10 years; sadly, the more you look after Acacias and make them thrive, the quicker they approach the end of their lifespan.

Hey jenni, thanks for the advice. As you can probably telI I know nothing about gardening. I'm probably leaning towards a disease more than age only because I'm guessing they were all planted at the same time and as you say they should all look similar.

I've included some close ups so someone might be able to possibly identify the plant. Curious what they actually are. At some stage in the near future I'm left with that awkward decision when to cull them\rip them out and start again, probably with something more hardy and dense foliage like syzygium australe. I've done some good things with this plant as a screen in our backyard, i like the intense dense green and virtually care free once established.

If "powder puff" refers to Calliandra haematocephala or C. surinamensis, this is really a shrub rather than a tree and far too low growing to be any attraction to woodpeckers :-) I agree with Mike that it was a older, dead cane that has become infested with insects that feed and process dead wood. Not really any big deal but suggest removing that cane at the base of the plant. That should encourage some newer basal growth as well as remove any future insect issues from migrating into the healthy stuff.

My garden hedges appear to have 2 different problems causing them to die off. At one end all foliage has died off, and a white mottling can be seen on the branches. At the other end, again the foliage has died off, but black clumps are seen on all branches White Mottling Black Clumps Healthy

I agree with mulch the heck out of them. But I'm wondering what the root systems look like. Have you dug up any of the dead ones to take a look at the roots? That veinal yellowing reminds me of a girdling problem. You might want to check for girdling roots. Container grown plants can often suffer from that. Where did you get the plants from? If the plan was for a formal clipped hedge, I'd probably use Acacia longifolia instead. I think a more naturalistic hedge with Grevillea, Banksia, and Melaleuca would be more interesting though.

Replace the dead trees, 15 dead out of 65 planted is not great, but not the worst either. The soil may be too rich for conifers, try ordinary native soil for the replacement trees, don't disturb the other trees that have taken. Moreover, don't fertilize new transplants, it would have the undesired effect of stimulating the growth of foliage, whereas they should instead grow the roots they lost when they were dug up. Note that these large transplants have to continue their lives with as little as 5% of their roots. Good luck!
