Comments (1)Hm....I tend to keep mine on the dry side, and this encourages it to send out LOOOOOOOOONG roots that travel back down to the pot, and sometimes under it. I technically have two plants. One is a cutting from a grower who was closing shop and moving, and the other is a seedling I ordered from an ebay grower. Between the two plants, I have about 12-14 feet of vines, and they don't seem to care that I only water once a week, letting it run through and drain out. Sometimes I skip a watering and they go two weeks. I'm not at blooming size, yet, but I haven't seen any adverse effects of my watering habits, so I can only assume this is working. I've been following this routine with my V. planifolia for four years. I'm no Vanilla expert, but I do recall that when I received the cutting, the grower told me to let the cut ends dry and form a callus, and then plant it. Perhaps you should just dust with cinnamon (to prevent rot) and let it form a callus for a few days before repotting...that's my best suggestion. Good luck!...See Morevanilla
Comments (3)I recieved one a couple of years ago for my birthday from a friend. She also bought one for herself, and got them from our only local orchid house. They were both planted in soil and we were instructed to repot in african violet soil. Mine just died a couple of months ago. I think the soil did it, but my friend's has grown really long and very firm. And it is in soil. I think if I got another one I would pot it in the same mix that I use for my phrags....See MoreVanilla bean orchid, best growing conditions
Comments (12)I ended up getting a couple too despite the fact they can grow 10 meters + lol. One I put in a 12 inch pot with regular potting mix with an upside down tomato cage. I just wrap it around and around. It's growing like crazy. The other I tied to a palm tree with panty hose (knee hi's) and it seems to be slowly beginning to attach itself to the tree. It's in regular, sandy Florida soil (no supplements or fertilizer). If we haven't any had rain for 2 or 3 weeks, I've watered deeply and allowed to completely dry out again. In the summer we have regular rain and that's all they get, lol. Definitely has grown a few feet, but still needs the attachment to the tree. We had a few nights where it was down close to 32 degrees but I don't think ever got to freezing. It's been a couple of weeks, no damage whats so ever. :> They are supposed to be epiphytic (sp?) in nature so I'm starting to think the potting medium is not super critical....See MoreSanskar
