Growing Vanilla Beans
Comments (3)Vanilla is an orchid so it likes the rainforest. It grows under the canopy as a vine. It takes about 10 months for vanilla to produce a ripe bean. The sap if it gets in the eye can cause blindness which our friends in Dominica say is permanent. If you do the research and know the pitfalls try it....See MoreVanilla Orchids
Comments (18)The bamboo is just in the background, the Vanilla (same species as yours, the most common) is on a tall (4 metre) old tree stump. Holds more moisture than bamboo would. But better to keep the support/pole reasonably short. My first plants were on some Carpentaria palms. In no time the Vanilla disappeared up into the crowns, about 20 metres up. Never knew they were flowering until one day a frond came down bringing some orchid vine with it and flowers. So then I started putting broken off pieces on shorter stumps and have seen more flowering. A couple of times palm fronds have loosened some of the vines and they've hung down closer to the ground and flowered. If you've got a suitable outdoor climate you can put them just about anywhere on anything, except the ground, and they'll grow. Old wood that absorbs/holds moisture is ideal. I've probably got close to 20 plants now, they're easy to propagate from pieces....See Morevanilla bean plant
Comments (10)this posting really caught my eye I am a Canadian from Ontario but have a home 12 years now down in southern Florida. At one time I had a small plant given to me by a neigbhour of the vanilla plant. I managed to keep it two no I think three years in one of my garden beds. It was beginning to really grow and I thought maybe I will get bloom and even seeds The growth is quite attractive and although I know it is a vine I had let it grow, on the ground, as did my neigbhour One year when I came back down, the man who takes care of the yard, when I am back in Canada, had chopped every bit out thinking it a weed. I was ever so sad about it but nothing to be done The neigbhour who had the plant naturalized even in her garden moved away and the new people chopped out the entire bed the plants where growing in. So could not get further I have seen it in nurserys down here and I know a couple of people in Ft Myers, Florida, where I live have it growing But i have never actually made contact with them. I think if I recall correctly I did see it growing in the greenhouse tropical building of the Montreal Botanical gardens. that was maybe four years ago. Would be nice to give it a try And I enjoyed reading the comments...See MoreBhut Jolokia best growing conditions?
Comments (155)This thread has come a long way ; The year was 2008. Bruce (esox07) and edymnion are two of the three familiar names to me. I, myself, was not then growing anything with more heat than Habanero. The topic ( Bhut best growing conditions ) has covered just about any issue about growing chili peppers, from seeds source, germination, growing under lights, potting soil,.. ..you name it. Bhut Jolokia is on my grow list in the future. Most people who have grown it , have described it as one of the tastiest super hots. Good reading stuff here. Seysonn...See Morearoideana
