How do you use your livingroom vs family room?
Comments (12)I have one TV also, and folks can't seem to understand why I don't have one in the kitchen and one in the front parlor. I was raised that way...when I was a kid, the TV was kept in the "TV room." In the house that I am in now, I have a den, where the TV lives. I am moving soon to my grandparent's farmhouse, and one of the four bedrooms will be my den, complete with TV. I use the front parlor for company. I figure that friends come to visit with me, not my TV. We have a nice dinner in the dining room, and then drink (coffee, tea, wine, beer) in the parlor...or if it is nice, out on the back porch. Of course, the evening is filled with great and memorable conversation. Joe...See MoreHow to decide between light and airy vs. dark and cozy for living room
Comments (31)Thanks, Monica. : ). Your room looks so homey, and very much like normal life around here. ; ) I was picturing a wall color more like your orange- rust colored pillow when I heard burnished pumpkin. Aimee, it could be partly a function of climate, which might be why I find this to be a challenging decision! That's very interesting that you find cozy colors to be more intimate. I find that appealing, rather than off-putting, but we seldom have "strangers" in our home, and if they are here, I usually want to help them feel welcome and as much a part of the family as possible. Annie, can I come over and stay at your house and see what it's like to live in warm and cozy for a week? : ). I've seen a few pictures of your home, and it looks very warm and inviting. Thanks Lisa. Yes, the little blue library is off our kitchen. The kitchen can just be seen to the right of it. The doorway to the living room is between the library (errr, the bathroom, to be more specific) and the kitchen. Could we possibly get away with a color like this in the living room? This was my absolute favorite room at the home show this year. It's a dark bluish green....See MoreHelp me create a pretty sitting room by day and guest oasis by night.
Comments (44)Bpathome, the rods separate from the middle (because they are expandable) so I slip off the curtains and neatly fold them, and store them with my linens and lay the rods along the drawer edge when they are not in use. I have a handheld laundry steamer, so when I want to pop them back on, I just give them a quick steam to look neatly pressed. The only sign of them when not in use, is a small (postage stamp size) magnet square that I permanently adhered to the doors top corners (because my doors are not metal). But I painted them white and they lay almost flush to the door (less than 1/8 thick) so they really do just blend right into the door....See MoreThe "Living" Room and Other Names for Rooms
Comments (43)I grew up in a Chicago apartment and it had a living room (across the hall from the dining room), which was always called the living room, not the parlor or any other term. So all my homes since then have had "living rooms". In this house we turned one of the bedrooms into a "den", which has sofas and is where we watch tv. I also never had a tv in the living room, not growing up and not in any home since. Chisue - you mentioned the Stouffer's on Randolph and Wabash, across from Field's. That almost brought tears to my eyes! It was my mother's and my favorite restaurant after or in the midst of shopping at Field's and Carson's. We preferred the window table that faced Randolph. So very many meals there...The spinach souffle! Sable...See MoreLynnNM
