Password Storage App

Does anyone have a recommendation for a password management app for Mac and Iphone. I've been using a little address book for quite a few years, but after changing passwords, accounts, etc. it's getting a bit messy. Thanks!

You'll probably get lots of advice here, both to use and not use one. I use one. I use 1Password.

I've looked at others. 1Password is not inexpensive as password managers go. But I went with it because the development team seems pretty serious about keeping the product secure and usable; other password managers have demonstrated shortcomings I found unacceptable; there are versions for both macOS and iOS; syncing passwords can be done without some third-party cloud provider; and, well, because it just works like a Mac.

I spent more on my Mac because I can tell the difference from other hardware and operating systems; it didn't make sense to cheap out on something I use a dozen (or more) times a day.

Thanks steve_o. Looks to be just a few dollars/month, which seems reasonable to me.

I use RoboForm for keeping up with passwords. You can store up to 10 for free, more than that you have to buy it but it's not expensive. It stays on your computer (I always back it up ) and when you get ready to go to a site simply open up the pull-down menu and click on the site. It opens the site and logs you in automatically. Windows 10 wants a password to open

I have a windows 10 laptop on which I never set up a Windows account, and it has never asked for a password. So the Windows account is the culprit. This laptop has a touch screen, so Windows 10 is a perfect system for it. Yes, I do still use a mouse much of the time, too. Somehow or other, I finally got my desktop back to a local account, and now it is opening with my picture and name and no mention of a password. So I'm happy now.

Elmer, you are a better person than then me! First of all, thank you for your help on my other dilemma. I have such difficulty with Win 10. I have learned enough to do what I need to do. But, I knew my way around XP so easily I took such better care of my computers than I do now. For example, I kept getting pop ups from MS that updates were ready to be installed. It’s on my screen now. “Important Updates are Pending.” i keep hitting ‘remind me later.’ Last night, before shutting down, I tried to find the updates to install. Couldn’t find them! Tried a search, sat there for 1/2 hour and get, ‘ no results.’ I wanted to let them in as I was going to bed. Couldn’t find them. Went to Administrative Tools. Nothing! Looked around Best I could, not knowing where anything is, no luck! Went to bed. Came here and saw Ccecilm’s post and was glad I didn’t find them! I’ll hold off for now. Thanks, Jane

Some sites, especially financial, have security questions. These can be a bear, so keep track of them as well. After my dad had his stroke, he and I were working with his financial institutions on some things. We were on the phone with a representative asked the security questions so that they could talk to me. The question was, where did you first meet your spouse? Now remember, you usually get to choose from a selection of security questions, and provide your own answer. Well, Dad launches into the story of how he and Mom met. The rep is quiet. At one point I asked the rep if he needs the verbatim answer Dad had provided when he set the questions up? Yes. Had Dad done so in his answer here on the phone? Well, no. Was he close? ”It has to be exactly what he entered online.” So we had to find a workaround, which took at least a week. In another day, I had to do something online when he was not available. I could answer most of the security questions, but then came this: What was the name of your grandmother’s dog? His grandmother had a dog? Which grandmother? When? Here, or in the old counter? I asked Dad later, he had no idea. (in case you were wondering, we had just signed the paperwork allowing me to manage the trust, this work was while we were still getting it changed over with the institutions themselves. Some things needed doing in the meantime.)

My recommendation is to buy a new little address book. Foolproof, works when the power goes out (intentionally silly), and immune to hackers.

Or, just use a password protected file that you keep on your PC.

I like LastPass. It's free version has many of the perks of most of the other apps' paid versions. You can store an unlimited number of passwords and you can alternate between devices. Most of the other apps limit you to one platform. It's rather simple to use, and you only have to remember the master password. It also has the option to will your 'form-fill' info (name, address, phone number, email, etc.) that websites require when signing up for an account or shopping and the like, so you don't have to type it each time. Another perk is that you can create subfolders for your passwords. It has optional 2-code authorization, too, meaning more security. I research everything and this password manager and DashLane were the highest rating for free password managers on every website I researched. LastPass was hacked a few years ago but no one's information was compromised due to their extreme security measures. This is one of the reasons I chose this password manager over DashLane. DashLane is also fairly new, so I didn't want to take the chance. Hope this helps!!

I also use LastPass. It's free or you can get the premium version for $12/year.

Works well and you can create strong passwords. But I also keep a typed hard copy as well on a flash drive for extra protection in case the computer crashes.

Thank you Lindsey. The only problem I'm having with it is that when I go to a new site and manually log in the popup menu that should ask me whether I want to add it as a new site doesn't appear and I haven't been able to figure this one out.

However, I cannot emphasize enough to all that you also make a hard copy and save it on a thumb drive just in case.

Do you have the browser extension added on? If you do, you have to make sure you are logged into your Last Pass account otherwise the popup menu won't show up for new pages/logins. It might be logging you out of your Last Pass account each time you close your browser window. You can change the settings so that it keeps you logged in, but I believe the default settings are set to log you out each time you close your browser window as it is more secure that way.
