wintering lily in pots over winter can it be done?
Comments (5)Sorry to hear about all your troubles, but glad it sounds like things are back on track. I would put them in the garage before any hard frosts begin. The lilies should be going into dormancy then and will wait out the winter. Find the warmest spot, group the pots together and maybe cover with an old blanket? They shouldn't need any water and having them a little on the dry side might actually help. Hopefully they can handle the lows in the garage. I thing the basement will be too warm and they'll start growing earlier than you want. I'd like to hear what other people suggest, I sometimes have trouble overwintering bulbs in pots. You might want to get a roll of landscape fabric to line your baskets. The fabric kind, not the plastic. It will last longer than the paper....See Morewinter care for tree hydrangea?
Comments (0)How should I care for my tree form PeeGee Hydrangea in a large pot this winter? The pot is in a full sun WINDY winter location in Zone 5. I'm capable of moving the pot with help from DH late fall & early spring. Where? 1) full shade/enclosed on 3 sides and covered porch? 2) against house with more wind, but partial sun? When to water/how much?...See MoreHow to Winter Rooting Hydrangeas??
Comments (1)Hi jas4141 ~ I have done 2 or 3 ways of rooting & potted them for a year or 2 as well. I'd remove the plastic cover & replace w/ burlap wrap or mulch ~ leaves or woodchips ~ sinking in a hole, pot & all is great, easier to plant in permanent home by Spring! The important thing is have a friend or neighbor water a few times while you're gone, pending on how much rain or snow can provide. Most Hs are root-hardy in our similar zone ~ blooming is another story. A broken Kyushu stem, as thick as my middle finger, I've rooted stayed in the pot for 2 seasons before sinking in the ground ~ grew in leaps & blossomed. Now I intend to relocate in Spring to a better site w/ more room to grow, the 7x7ft size she'll grow to be. Good luck & have fun where you Winter!...See MorePotted Hydrangeas in Winter
Comments (7)I might wrap the sides of the pot in bubble wrap (which you can cover with something for aesthetics if so desired) to minimize temperature swings. The plant should be fully hardy in a sheltered spot in a pot in your zone, but by keeping the soil temperature even, it will be less stressful to the plant and should decrease the likelihood of early leaf-out if you have a brief mid- to late-winter warm spell. Without being sheltered by large volumes of soil like in-ground plants, the soil in a pot tends to freeze and thaw repeatedly over the winter, which isn't particularly good for the plant. Hence the suggestion for insulation. The goal would be to have the soil lightly moist, not dry and not soggy. How often the watering is needed depends on how dry the air is, what the temperature is, etc., so you really have to establish how moist the soil is by sticking your finger into the soil a few inches. IME H. paniculata cultivars like Little Lime really don't like wet soil, so you want to avoid that....See More- 7 years ago
