Comments (8)We have a stained island because we thought this would get the most wear and tear. We have painted glazed cabinets on the perimeter. One of our cabinets got a pretty big ding in it during the work on the kitchen. It was on the side panel, right in a raised piece of woodwork, in a very visible spot. We could have made the KD/GC replace the cabinet because the ding was caused by the workers. But the KD asked if he could try touching it up first. It took him quite a while, and several days of touching up, letting it dry, glazing etc. But honestly, it would be hard for me to point out the exact spot where he touched it up. And this wasn't just a scratch in the paint, but an actual dent in the raised wood. No one would ever notice it. He matched the paint and the glazing perfectly, even though the paint was put on at a factory and he did it by hand. Now I doubt I'd do as good a job as he did, but I will call him if I have any need to have such a major touchup done again. Must keep his number! I had stained wood in my prior kitchen, which looked good as new after 10 years. I hope the white holds up, but I don't expect it to hold up quite as well. It has only been about 5 or six months, but so far so good. We used beadboard on the wall under a counter with stools, and figured that would hide scuff marks better than solid white. We also don't let the kids wear shoes when they sit at the counter....See MoreWhy are my brand new maple cabinets painted with lacquer chipping
Comments (14)I'm having the exact same problem too. I refaced my cabinets in 2018. The door frames are maple and the panel is MDF. No clue about any of this. The chipping started less than a year into it all, but it seemed like fairly immediately. The installer did come back and re-paint the doors that were chipped. Now, in 2021, the kitchen is so chipped, it's pretty embarrassing to even see. I wouldn't even be able to sell my house like this. I'm so sad. I'm wondering if they can be repainted by someone else, or are they irreparable. Is this a common problem?...See Morelacquer painted kitchen cabinets chipping
Comments (10)@guy1little It almost sounds as if the surface may not have been adequately prepped with sanding and primer. The new lacquer just didn't have the best base for adhering, possibly. Sometimes when you have a widespread failure of cabinetry finish, the best thing to do might be to step back and assess the possibility of a total kitchen remodel. It sounds overwhelming, but in the long run, to get new cabinetry from a company that does a factory finish with a 2-part conversion varnish that carries a lifetime warranty might be the best investment long term. If you absolutely cannot fathom something of that magnitude, then get some lacquer matched to the existing color and keep touching up yourself with a paintbrush. You could also hire a refinisher to come in and repeat the refinishing process, but if you are considering that, then new cabinetry with a factory finish should be discussed because a refinishing job on site is hard to compare to one done with large equipment designed for perfection using the industry standard, post-catalyzed, 2-part conversion varnish finish. The fact that your cabinetry is coming into this game with previous finish on it that would need to be stripped down and prepped not just for the first time but for a second time now is also a huge cost factor and may impact delicate design details of the cabinetry moldings that wear away with multiple refinishings. After a lot of research for my own kitchen remodel, I like to recommend that people start by looking at Plato Woodworking's Prelude line or anything from Jay Rambo. Both those companies will do flawless finishes for you with lifetime warranties. Bentwood/Harmoni Kitchens is another supplier with outstanding finish quality but isn't as cost effective from what I have found as the other two I mentioned. Of course, there are many others, as well, but I recommend to pick a cabinet supplier based on the finish quality first, then the styling, since as you can see a prematurely failing finish exceeds anything else in consumer satisfaction....See MoreChipping Kitchen Cabinets, Help Please
Comments (5)that's the top coat. not a toner. have no idea what type it is, but it will all need to be completely stripped and sanded off and refinished. It is old, and dried and was prob never meant to be used on wood cabinets. Take a cotton ball and dip in alcohol. wipe it across. does it remove it or feel tacky or sticky? if so, it's Shellac. if not and it doesn't remove it, it's some type of poly and don't even think of just sanding off the peeling parts and painting on top of all of that. It ALL has to come off or you'll be wasting your time....See Morekwalsh61
