Ditching Landline. What's the Cheapest Cell?
Comments (19)One caution folks: Before you tell someone to get a particular cell phone, be careful that there will be service available in their area! LOL I had Virgin Mobile as my first (and prepaid) cell phone and was very happy with it, except for the coverage. Virgin and STI use the Sprint PCS network (note that this is not the entire Sprint network) and that's fine if you're in major metro areas or on major highways & freeways you're in pretty good shape. However, even in the metro area I found several spots that were dead. T-mobile is very iffy in many areas around here. TDMA and analog were fine but they're both gone now. I got a GSM phone on the T-mobile network, that was fair, on the Cingular/AT&T network was pretty good but still not the best. I now have a CDMA Tracfone and have far better coverage in the 5-state area I've traveled as it's on the Verizon network and around here, it's got better coverage. For a while I carried 3 cell phones when I traveled a longer distance and wanted to have best chance of coverage. Check the maps for coverage in YOUR area, AND in the areas you travel where you want coverage. Tracfone uses all different networks depending on the location, phone and how you set it up. Cost will vary. But if you like to "ding around" so to speak you can get some great deals on Tracfone between special deals, promo codes (it's essentially a coupon) and more. Depending on how much effort I wish to put into it, I run about $2/mo to about $8/month for my Tracfone. I just added something like 7 months and about 250 minutes for $20 so that's a little under $3/mo. When I get to the end, I'll just buy a year of time since I'll have enough minutes carried over from previous purchases. I don't use the available voicemail on it. Don't even have it set up. I use the caller ID to call people back when they call. If they block their number they don't get to me and don't get called back. Long distance and roaming are no extra charge on my particular setup however texting is .3 unit per text whether sent or received. There are some that have free text receiving. There's other phones that have better text rates if you're big time into texting. I'm not. I have a nice LG flip phone that gets great reception, super battery life and I'm very pleased with this setup. There's another company called PagePlus that some people really like but they're more expensive for me so I can't see switching. They too use the Verizon network so it should be comparable coverage for me. Just noticed you're in Minnesota. Depending on where you're at and where you travel you might want to consider CDMA. Be warned, many will push you to GSM and I personally think CDMA is superior in MN. Just do a little research and a little planning and you can save some money. One thing though, I highly recommend having an extra charger or two. I keep one in my vehicle, and have an extra AC charger to carry with me when I travel. And an out of town friend was here for a couple weeks and his charger died on him so he'd have been SOL if he didn't have an extra charger. I usually get them on the clearance aisles or on ebay. Oh, did you know that cell phone chargers are one of the most often forgotten items in hotels???...See MoreHow does someone prone to medication overuse deal with real pain?
Comments (14)Wildchild, I think you're exactly right. (And that's brave of you to say, too.) My sister is bipolar, too. She is pretty good about taking her meds and staying in treatment, but the doctors have always had a hard time treating her. She is depressed most of the time, with periods of mania. She's tried virtually every drug they use to treat bipolar, plus several rounds of electroconvulsive therapy. Susan_on, that quote from Drew Pinsky was a lightning bolt for me. That's *exactly* what I think about her. She doesn't bring the problems on herself (kidney stones, car accident where the other driver was cited, etc.), but she is pleased when something happens, because it gets her attention and narcotic drugs. It's hard to judge someone else's level of pain, but I always wonder. For example, right now, there's something wrong with her hip. The doctors thought it might have been fractured, but it wasn't, and they are thinking it's just a pulled muscle. I watch her - it's painful for her to walk, and she has to adjust herself to sit comfortably, but she'll watch television for hours without pain. It doesn't seem any worse to me than when my hip bursitis flares up - quite painful, but certainly bearable. It would never occur to me to use narcotics for my bursitis, but she immediately reaches for them. Sue, yes, she's tried to get to the root of the pain. It isn't any one thing. At one point it was her shoulder. She had surgery, it got better ... and then there were kidney stones. They passed, she got better ... and then something happened to her hip. She goes to the doctor, does physical therapy, tries alternative therapies, but something else always goes wrong. And she always asks for something for the pain. I'm not at all convinced that getting rid of the pain would take care of the problem. In fact, I'm pretty much convinced otherwise. I don't know that she's physically addicted, simply because she doesn't get enough of the medication. She certainly has a tolerance to narcotic pain meds, but so does anyone who takes them long-term, addicted or not. She misses the drugs when they're gone, but never has any sort of detoxing symptoms. (I'm intimately familiar with those, from watching my addicted clients when they get locked up without their drugs.) She won't agree to hospitalization or treatment of any kind, and she's not at a point where she could be forced. She goes to work every day, her daughter is well cared-for (by me, when she's on a drug binge), she keeps her doctor appointments. No court would find that she was a danger to herself, and I don't really want to do that, anyway. I've spent a lot of years trying to save her from herself, and finally got it through my head that it's not helpful. Linda_in_Iowa, I spoke to my doctor yesterday, and she recommended the same thing as you did. I've got the name of a pain clinic, and I suggested that she go. We'll see....See MoreDo you have a landline?
Comments (71)Where does this battery go, in the phone base? I didn't notice anything about a battery in the phone set up material and the Uverse installer never mentioned it. I had a princess phone (that just plugs into the jack) but it didn't get a dial tone when I tried it during the first power outage after the uverse was installed so I trashed it, maybe that phone just died but I thought it was because of the new set up. I did notice on the bill that we pay quite a bit more for this phone service than we did the previous type (about a third more), next year when I have to 'renegotiate' the uverse plan I'll ask about cutting that part back to the old version and see if it's possible. Then I can find an old-style phone that fits my face. lol...See MoreCan someone tell me how did that fittonia get that pink!!
Comments (9)Sometimes a plant naturally sports or grows a mutant branch or shoot which growers cultivate. Sometimes it's done by intentional breeding efforts. There are ways of exposing a plant or cuttings to various treatments that will lead to mutation. Treating a crop with various growth hormones can bring on changes. And last by not least, there is genetic manipulation in the lab. Of course these changes have to be stable to be able to successfully bring the plant to market. Where did you find these new nerve plants? I'm a fan of pink fittonias and would love to get my hands on a couple of the ones pictured!...See Moredesertsteph
