"Don't Click on the Link"

All this talk about computer hacking and the advice is if you get a suspicious e-mail directing you to change your log in info, password, etc., don't click on the link.

Yesterday I was researching a restaurant on Trip Advisor. I clicked on the restaurant's website link to get some menu information and immediately a page appears saying my computer was infected, don't turn it off, and to call 856 -XXX-XXXX for assistance in solving the problem. Every time I tried to close the page by clicking the "X" in the upper right hand corner the page reappeared. I then went to the browser icon on the tool bar, right clicked and "close window" to shut down my browser.

Next I ran Malware bytes and nothing was found. I opened up my browser and everything was OK.

My question is, is it really just clicking on the link or does something else have to happen to infect your computer?

I did call the restaurant and alerted them that their website link on TA had been hacked.

If either the TA site or the restaurant site is hosting an ad that has been compromised then yes...it really is that easy especially if your browser isn't properly secured. I would ask which Windows/which browser were you using when this occurred?

I had also brought one- if it was in miracle grow- it might have came from me. I had gone to a hydrangea propagation seminar at Aldridge BG that spring, so if it came from me, then the plant came from assorted cuttings that were provided for that class. Lynn .... glad you like the Jeffrey Court field tile .... yes marry him (AND live happily ever after in sunny California!!) .... can you tell, I hate MI in the winter!!! I'm sure both you and Susan are doing much more extensive remodeling jobs than we did. I didn't get new cabinets. Really couldn't afford that and besides, my dad built those for me 32 years ago. Now, they DO need refinishing, and come spring, I'm going to decide just WHAT to do about that!! But I want to live with the rest of the NEW stuff for awhile. I did go to Beaver Tile and the lady there helped me a LOT!!! They are a tile showroom and do not sell to the public, so I have a tile store nearby I am using. But the young girl in that store just doesn't seem interested in my small project. She has made a few suggestions regarding the field tile (which I had already decided on); but as for the *sparkley* inset, she ONLY sees dark brown. Well, to get to the point, yesterday Kathy, suggested pulling the green out of the granite. So, I am getting samples of the colors: Thatch and Morrell. She thought the Thatch (caramel) color would blend OK (she's not sure about the glazing around the tile however; but the Morrell, would blend good and be a little more contrast. I am *trying* to put a pix of the Morrell in here. Read descriptions under pix!! Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! OK .... Picasa seems to have CHANGED where to find the html code so, hoping this works (oh, why can't I be tech savvy!!!) Well, I CAN NOT FIND anywhere those codes on Picasa .... so, you can (hopefully) copy/paste this in (hoping it shows up and you DON'T need a password) Could this be because I used a pix from a website and NOT an actual photo I took??? I have an ice cream man story. When I was little (around 7) our ice cream man was arrested for shoplifting a package of lunch meat. It was a a small mom and pop store and my mom was friends with the wife. For some odd reason I was taken out of school for the day so I could attend the trial. LOL Ice cream man cried, said he was just distracted and put the salami or bologna (whatever) in his pocket without thinking LOL I don't remember the verdict. I do remember the shop owner and the ice cream man mended fences eventually. I can't say a the words here (would get me booted) but this was before political correct speech took hold. Everyone involved still referred to one another with what would be considered ethnic slurs today. Without malice. Multi-culturalism and diversity back in the 50s.

Thanks for the info. I can't tell you how to secure Edge because I refuse to use it. By necessity, I use IE 11 for work and for NOTHING ELSE. What I do use for my normal browsing is Firefox + NoScript + AdBlockPlus. I make no guarantees, but learning how to use this combination does offer some protection that the others do not if you encounter web sites that have been compromised with malicious scripts and ads. As with all things, Your Mileage May Vary.
