Never click on any pop up like that, exit the browser or look in the task manager and end the process if you see it.

I'll bet the message goes away if the PC is restarted or shut down and turned on at a later time.

I like to search for updates manually on the first Wed-Thurs-Fri of the month (they usually get released on Tues) and get them done rather than waiting for Windows to decide when it happens. I've never seen a banner ad like that before...is it a Win 7 thing? I can see how some folks would find that disturbing.

I'm no expert and of course any display could be copied and faked. However, that display is EXACTLY what I see every month when windows does updates. I have them set for automatic but I still get the message because Windows doesn't want to mess you up if you are working at 2am or whatever. I have seen the display with win8.1 and 10. I think I have seen it with win 7 but not sure.

I agree exactly. There are some things brewing.

You were always Prompted by Windows when your Computer Needed Restarted, or at least as far back as I can remember. Yes, Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 all have a Banner like that. It was a Window that opened instead of the Banner. The window usually gave you an Option to Restart Now or Restart Later! It let you know the Update Install wouldn't be completed until the computer was restarted.

If your computer is set to Automatically Update (Microsoft has the Default Set to Automatically Download, you must Change this in the Settings), your computer will Automatically Download and Install the Updates.

If a Restart is needed, Microsoft Warns you (with a Window or Banner) so that you can Save Documents you may be working on. You can press the Postpone/Restart Later or Restart Now button, or Microsoft will automatically restart for you if you do not respond!

A another approach to consider, one that's much easier for the average user, is to simply allow software to auto-update. I think that's especially important for Windows.

Companies and organizations that produce software often discover troublesome bugs, problems, security openings, etc., and will rush out updates. Non-critical changes get held and accumulated, to be send out periodically.

Most people don't keep track of when they've checked for updates, what they've checked for updates, etc., The consequence if being untimely is that needed updates aren't installed that might prevent a problem. I'm not sure what's gained from the alternative.

I get messages from Secret Garden when there are critical changes. That is a big help. I understand the choice of letting the computer make the decisions but I would like to be aware of what is done.

What is Secret Garden?

Do you have the technical background to review and understand the content of periodic software updates for Windows and any of the various programs you use? And have some criteria to assess which to include and which to not include? Most people don't. The fact that you didn't recognize the standard Windows reboot for update message suggests your PC knowledge isn't deep enough to really make such assessments. I'm not being critical AT ALL, I don't have or want to have such knowledge either. I just think you could probably simplify your PC use. Do as you like but don't think you're doing something positive or worthwhile by stalling updates.

Myself, I a firm believer in Updates. I have always downloaded most of the available updates, in the 99% range. Many Updates have to do with Security Issues and I like things here to be secure. All of my computers are currently running Window 10 which is set to Automatically Update (I do review my Update monthly). In the past I always had mine set so I could Pick and Choose the Updates, but usually found myself downloading and Installing everything. I really don't Mind having Microsoft handling the Updates, frees a lot of my time up!

Very Rarely have I had problems with an Update (not saying I haven't, because I have). A few years back I did have to block One Update, it caused my computer to have video issues. The Card Manufacturer did correct the problem and released a revised update on their Website and then later to Microsoft.

What I had said was - however you found this person, she doesn't appear to be an expert. Her "security" alerts come from forwarding information she receives from the original sources. There appears to be no personal analysis or value added on her part.

If her advice is to hold back from making recommended program updates automatically, I'd say that disqualifies her from the start from being an information source worth following. The one forum at that site I looked at has only a few 3rd party comments per month, hardly a hotbed of activity. Do as you wish.

I'm sorry you feel that way about Landzdown and Security Garden. Corrine is a much awarded beloved person by Zep, Raven Cajun and other volunteers who regularly send people to her. They also volunteer there. Landzdown is the place where they work extremely hard to save your computer after collateral damage has been done. I'm surprised you have been here so long and never heard of Corrine or Landzdown. She has been on here, I think , once or twice. Take another look at what they tackle. Go into the sites and see how they will follow along and teach you how to run logs and use specialized software as they dig deep to solve big problems.
