Who's your favorite online orchid seller?
Comments (25)Carmela's is by far the best outfit I've ordered plants from. The plants come well-packed, of good size, and have done the best long-term in my collection. Eoom is next--wish their selection was bigger--followed by v.coerulea on ebay, then Carter and Holmes, whose stuff is small and young for the pot size. Comments (11)Below are a few Ebay orchid sellers I have bought species Cattleyas from who are currently on my favorites list. They donÂt all have 100 percent positive feedbacks, and now that I think about it, some of them have used pictures in ways that I mentioned in the thread on inaccurate Ebay listings. Using flower pictures that represent a species when no picture of the plant for sale is available, for example. Actually, thatÂs fairly common in listings for unbloomed species orchids. Anyway, they are all sellers I trust  not the only good ones, by any means  just some I have dealt with repeatedly or in the recent past. rxorchids (also uses the name rxcattleya) shermantp terif1 shtief jellybeanaiko duncansflora The seller rxorchids/rxcattleya is at the top of my list because he sells such high quality plants. Divisions of fine and/or awarded orchids, imported cultivars, etc. that are always healthy and always properly identified. His listings are very minimal in the info provided, he does not communicate unless communicated with, and heÂs a little slow to ship. DonÂt worry about that. HeÂs honest and reliable and has great stuff. Some of it is expensive, but not overpriced. Another particular favorite of mine can't be listed. I got a message when I tried to post this saying that his seller name is not allowed to appear on the forum due to some spam issue. Too bad - he's one of the best....See MoreReputable sellers of tree seeds online? Any suggestions?
Comments (10)It has become increasingly difficult to buy seeds abroad as both the USA and the EU have tightened rules and control is more intensive. Without a phytosanitary certificate customs can seize your seeds and destroy them. Many seed companies do not want the hassle of acquiring a phytosanitary certificate and do not send seeds outside the USA or the EU. I do not trust the sellers on Ebay because many sell seeds not true to name or sell old seeds that won 't germinate in a million years. Some seeds need cold AND moist storage otherwise these loose viability really quick (magnolia seeds for example). Many companies do not store these seeds the right way and the consequence is that the germination percentage is very low (or zero). My 20 year experience is that many seed sellers have a limited knowledge of the seeds they sell. Take for example Acer griseum. If seeds are harvested from a stand alone specimen the chance is very great that the majority of the seeds are empty. Seeds of Acer griseum should be harvested from a number of trees that are in close proximity to each other. A 'cut test' to determine viability percentage is not always useful. Some species have seeds with embryo defects (Lindera, Sassafras) and although looking alright won't germinate. My best germination results I always get with seeds that I harvested myself and sow within a week after harvesting....See MoreDendrobium peng seng
Comments (8)Well, I've revised my opinion of this orchid - the flowers last for 2 months, and it keeps making more buds - you can see buds above the flowers in the picture, and there are more on another growth. I'm officially happy with it. Tucker...See Moreminiplants Central KY 6a windowsill-grower
