How long does it take to grow a Mango in Newport Beach to fruiting?

5 years. I cant link for whatever reason on GW, anymore. But if you Google Maps- 481 E Bay Ave in Newport Beach- right one the corner, you can use the time slider of street view to see it as a 18" or so seedling in 2011,bigger in 2012,but REALLY grew fast from 2012-2014, and in June 2016 its blooming and a good 10' tall.

Interesting to see it fill out by the year.

My experience, 4 or 5 years. It depends how consistently you keep it watered during the summer. Mangoes can grow just fine here. Maybe not super well, but it's not that hard to grow them. They don't seem to be extremely productive though, but again, that could just be because people don't give them the care they need. The leaves do tend to get baked in the sun. Shade cloth can help, or a place that is partially shaded from afternoon sun exposure. Mangoes do better in just a little bit higher humidity than we have.

Really, mango is probably a good tropical fruit plant for a beginner here. Worst case, sometimes 6 years. You'd have to be really mistreating the plant for it to take 7.

The NB Mango seems too small for grafted. Further looking at it..the leafs dont seem Manila- the smallest Mango sold. So,I would guess its a seedling of a supermarket mango planted in 2010 or very early 2011- to be 18" by May 2011.

I've seen some soucal Mangoes on Google,loaded with fruits. Most are the smaller types- but who's complaining when its 200 fruits? Check out 3196 Gibraltar Ave. in Costa Mesa on Google maps. Its not the only one..I haven't bookmarked others around.

And Parker..since they can fruit pretty young..a Mango lover could always plant multiple tree's. I'm looking at my 4' Papaya with fruit. 5 so far. Well,If I had planted a row of them like that- say 20 or 30 ,plenty of fruit. Like who plants one Cornstalk?

Its how you do things in a cooler climate-lol.

Ed, The one paw paw got mowed down might re-sprout. Paw paw usually takes about 4-5 yrs to reach 7-8 feet tall and to produce. Mango is the most vigorous grower of all paw paws. Grafted American persimmon will take about 3-4 yrs to produce. Seedlings of D. Virginiana will take about 5-7 yrs to produce. You may want to protect these trees with wire cages to prevent them from being mowed down. Good luck!! Tony

My potted trees require an area about 6ft by 4ft to 6ft by 6ft per tree depending on how much alley one needs between trees. In my opinion a high tunnel needs to be taller than a forced air greenhouse. A high tunnel uses natural ventilation for cooling. So the top half will be much hotter than the lower half. With trees about 7-8 ft tall, a height of 14-16 ft would be ideal. Twelve ft might work for a high tunnel and probably would work for a greenhouse. On a greenhouse the rule of thumb is one air exchange per minute to limit temperature rise to 15F above ambient. With evaporative cooling I can keep it as cool inside as out. But I'm in an area with much lower humidity than you. The Mango are going to add greatly to your heating bill. You must keep them from freezing all winter rather than just during bloom. Your heating bill just increased about 20 times. I won't try them without a good commercial grade heating system like mine. With that you almost need fans for cooling rather than natural ventilation because it is much easier to automate. Plus Mango are too big for pots. Citrus will work in pots but they too need freeze protection all winter. The pluot you listed would be the last two on my list. F Supreme is very hard to pollinate. F Queen is very sweet but lacks flavor IMO. The others on my list are better IMO. Good luck!!

There are tall growing varieties and there are not so tall growing ones. Probably your best course of action is to let it grow as tall as possible to get a thickened trunk then cut it very low. That way you should get a number of side shoots/branches. If you cut it early with a thin trunk you're likely to get fewer branches. Having it up against a fence reduces the area branches have to spread out and is what promotes a taller tree. If you had a grafted tree those don't grow as tall as the ungrafted ones.

I've never seen root rot on a jaboticaba. Mine, which are in ground of course, are in the lowest point in my entire property. There have been some multi-day rain events that have left standing water in this area for a full 10 days without any root issues. During dry season, I'll let the hose run completely flooding the area. That doesn't leave any standing water for more than a day, but I usually have to do it a day or two in a row before flowering commences. Good luck. Harry
