Things Added To My Gardens

What i have added to 3 gardens of about 7500 sq. ft total might be boggling to some, but this is my hobby since retiring in mid 2,000....to my clay loam/silty clay loam.

[1] about 55-60 tons of medium/coarse sand

[2] about 50 cu. yds. of sphagnum local bog peat moss that comes well hydrated.

[3] about 45 tons of partially rotted horse manure with a lot of hay in it.

[4] scadooles of leaves and finely chopped leaves.

[5] about 10 tons of leaf compost

[6] about 200 pounds of rock dust

[7] some lime and gypsum

[8] a fair amount of fertilizer...both organicy and otherwise

[0] a very small amount of charcoal dust

Post some pics to see the size of the plot!

Also... you might want to think about adding a partridge in a pair tree at the very end too.

I do have a pear tree in one of the gardens and 3 small peach trees in another , but that is the only ones out in the gardens.

One garden is about 50 x 70 feet with a drainage channel and a couple part-way through paths. Another is about 45 x 50 with a couple bare paths. The other is about 45 x 90. The total gardened area is more like 8,000 sq. ft....no edit button on original post.

One of the gardens has been gardened for about 83 years. Another for 44 years, and another for 15 years and some of it longer.

I don't have a great camera and no real garden shots that show much. Still it is pretty with some of the area in bright green tillage radishes.

What a super job you're doing, You said you painted the front door area yourself. What brand of paint and what color did you use? At our former home, we saw this beautiful chinese red color on a house in an elite neighborhood. Tried to copy it's shutters and front door. I found out the owner's name and called and asked or maybe I wrote to them and asked if they knew the paint brand/paint color they used. The owner said it had been on for a long time but she had saved the can in case they wanted to redo the paint job. I took the information, went to that brand of paint store and had them to mix up the same formula and it was so thin. We always used Duron paints for about 25 yrs. but that wasn't Duron, so I took it to my friendly Duron Paint Store Mgr. and asked her if she could match that color. She asked me if I had added water to the paint, but I hadn't done nothing but stir it and try it on the front door. She worked for way over an hour trying to match that paint and when we paid up, she told me to tell the painter that she had recommended highly to use a black or navy blue primer before applying the red paint. Said red is the hardest color to cover over or blend in. The painter had never used those dark colors before and was skeptical but used a battleship grey instead(what he had in his stock probably)and his employee put 3 coats of the Duron paint on and it still didn't cover. You could see the brush steaks. Finally, I accepted it but wished I had agreed so easily. We kind of ran in similar situation when we painted the front door here a burgundy color.

Thanks, Lucy, yes i do have alot to be happy for. :) Theresa and Karyn, the 3rd pic is a rose. i dont know what type. all i know is it has been around a very very long time. My grandmother grew it and now i do as well. It has bunches of small double pink flowers and the plant has a very rambling vine like habbit. The leaves are very small as well. its like a climbing minature rose or something!!! Hummingbirds visit my clerodendrum everyday... i never get them in pic because the are so fast!!!

Helena---I have a hummer garden full of salvias and now that some are blooming it is satisfying. On the delphenium that I mentioned I have not seen the hummers use it , doesnt mean they havent, I really put it in for the change in color, but it may be on the way out for next year. Im really happy with the black and blues and the greggi which are used often here. Im also very happy with my lady in red which just might be the strongest and fullest plant I have.

When we first moved into this house we had mushrooms growing everywhere. I think it was caused by the lawn holding too much water and too much shade. We repaired two gutters and added a flexible tube to a downspout to redirect the water away from the house. With these improvements, additional landscaping, and regular mowing the mushrooms no longer pop up every spring. I have added planting beds along the front and side of the house, and evergreen trees/shrubs along the edge of my property, so that all that spring rain is used up. Our front lawn used to have a musty, funky smell in the spring that has now disappeared with all the plantings using the excess water. Not much we can do about the shade since our neighbor has 3 large Silver Maples that border our property. We trim what we can reach that hangs over our property but it's a losing battle. Tn seems to be deluged with rain in the spring, much more so than other places I have lived. Tn also seems to have an abundance of mushrooms spores.

"any plants"...You know what you are asking, but I don't for sure, so...

I do raise 7 plantings of sweet corn, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beets, onions, melons, watermelons, peppers, eggplant, squashes, pumpkins, lima beans [green], cauliflower, broccoli, butterhead lettuce, sugar snap peas, glads, and some more flowers.

No, I don't sell. That would be hard work. Also it takes a dedicated supply for sale....clean and cooled.

Impressive! How did you move all that material around? One wheelbarrow at a time or do you have machinery?

Well, I moved most of it 1 wheelbarrow at a time. A walk of a thousand miles begins with one step at a time. This was done over a period of several years, and while the more permanent additives are finished, yearly applications of organic matter and fertilizer and such goes on.

By the way, it is dream soil to work and plant in and the crops are quite good...and were pretty good in the old days too, but is so smooth now when planting.

I just have a front end tiller, potato digging fork, hoes, rakes, and seed starting things.

I used to have a small tractor with a 2 bottom mounted plow that did a very neat job. Back in the '50s, and '60s, I used to plow the garden and then disk it up really nice...and then rush out to plant most things.

Later, I went to fall plowing and then just working up a row or area as needed.

Later after amending a lot, I quit plowing and made some large unbordered beds...7 to 18 feet wide...yeah, I WALK on the soft soil some!!! I tend to ridge up some rows in the fall for early planting...making them warmer and dryer...kinda wet here in spring usually.
