Side by Side Refrigerator vs. French Door?
Comments (25)I was never happier to be rid of my side by side. I never used any of the space below about halfway down because we would never remember it was there and it was too hard to clean and nothing ever fit in it. I really did not like it. The freezer side same thing, anything low was not remembered. But then everyone is different. I so much appreciate the extra wide tray accommodation as we entertain a lot and it really comes in handy. I have a KA without ice/water in the door. I didn't want it and do not miss it either. We use ice a LOT and I like just scooping it up in one big scoop and putting in a glass or pitcher. If I could have my choice of refrigerator configuration I would want a single door upper with drawer on the bottom. I don't really like dealing with the double doors on the FD and seem to put everything on one side of the fridge. It's only my husband and I so it's fine but a little extra aggravation at times. The trade off for me is having all the refrigerated items at eye level, I just love that so much and I can't even tell you how much I love the extra width of the deli tray. While it's not perfect I would never go back to a sxs. IMHO they seem prehistoric to me now....See MoreKitchenaid vs Amana French Door Refrigerator
Comments (8)Just went through this myself and while Whirlpool now owns the companies that produce Amana, Maytag, and Jenn Air - Whirlpool does not yet make those brand models the way their Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid models are made. However, I did see at least one unit, I think it was indeed an Amana, that looked like the Whirlpool. (This was in a SxS and you could tell by the placement of the icemaker for the thru door ice and water.) I thought that some of the Amana FDs were on par w/ the KA french doors. And, Amana is known for their FD since they were the originator years ago. In the KA models, I noticed the fit and finish to be superior to most other FDs, but it definitely depends on your price point. If you were looking at fridges with the same features and the same price, I'd go w/ the KA. As far as JD Powers or Consumer Reports, check out the appliance repair forums before you make a decision. Samsung and LG are not highly though of there....See MoreKitchenAid vs. Whirlpool 5- Door French Door Refrigerators
Comments (0)I am looking online at the KitchenAid 5-door Refrigerator KRMF706EBS and trying to compare it to the Whirlpool 5-door refrigerator WRV976FDEM. I was told that Whirlpool makes KitchenAid.... are they identical in all respects except for logo and the fact that the Whirlpool is much cheaper? Also, only the KitchenAid comes in that new black stainless steel finish which is supposedly fingerprint and smudge resistant and easier to clean. Is that true? Is black stainless steel better than regular stainless steel? Does anyone have experience with these models and can speak to their ease of use, reliability, durability as compared to comparable models made by Samsung or LG?...See MoreFrench door fridge: Whirlpool vs GE vs Samsung vs ?
Comments (17)A couple of things to keep in mind with today's refrigerators. You can expect them to last, on average about 8 to 10 years before they need to be replaced. Another interesting fact is that today's modern refrigerators don't operate below 50 degrees F. That means no more garage refrigerators. I'm shopping for new appliance now because I'm remodeling my kitchen. My old refrigerator is in pristine condition and works perfectly. But it's white and would look out of place in my new kitchen. Having said that, I'm seriously considering having the doors powder coated or spray painted at an auto body shop to a new color. Except for energy efficienty, everything about my refrigerator is superior to what's being sold today. And even on the energy efficiency front, it will only consume about $15 more dollars per YEAR than a newer model. My recommendation would be to stay with GE, Whirlpool, or Frigidaire simply because they have better parts and servicing across the US. Samsung and LG parts and service can vary wildly depending upon where you live. Since the expected life of a refrigerator is so low, I'd say by the least expensive model that's meets you needs and pass on the expensive bells and whistles. It might also make economic sense in some cases to fork over the 7K+ for a built in refrigerator that will have a serviceable life of 20+ years. You could easily spend that amount replacing and servicing standalone refrigerators in that same 20+ years window....See MoreSherrie Zweig
