Kitchenaid vs Amana French Door Refrigerator

I am trying to decide which SS French Door bottom freezer refrigerator to buy and my head is spinning. I don't want an automatic icemaker, but like the filtered water inside the fridge. I was set on the Kitchen Aid but couldn't find many consumer reviews. The Amana was rated high in consumer reports but not in the owner reviews. I'd like to hear experiences from owners who have had their french door refrigerators longer than a few months. I really would like mine to last!

Hi Anna,
Amana makes KA and JennAir bottom mount fridges. I think it comes down to what you like. I just bought a JennAir regular depth because I am going to sink it into a wall. I think that For a "regular" fridge they are decent.

While indeed they are pretty much the same, somebody who caller herself "anna_banana" really should have the Amana. :-)

We just ordered the Architect Series II version. Only difference is the handles, the ice maker scoop, the logo tag, and the price. The rest is exactly the same. We ordered a range and dishwasher in the Architect Series so we got the one with matching handles. From what the salesperson told me (well respected high-end appliance store in Westfield, NJ), the only differences are the handles and the logo (beefier on the pro series)...not worth the x-tra $ to me.

We have the first generation of LG French door, purchased about 4 or 5 years ago for our renovation. At the time, it was the most highly recommended fridge both in here and in other media. Big mistake...we never had any problems with the lights burning, but the cheap plastic interior crisper bins and shelves kept breaking. Now the freezer door will not stay closed. We are getting rid of it and replacing it with the Samsung CD FD. We just purchased it today at Lowe's for $2069...it's about $3300 at Sears. Lowe's is having a big sale, plus some rebates and WA State energy rebates brought it down to the price we got. It's frustrating...originally I wanted the SZ 650, but didn't want to spend 5-6K. Now between the LG and the new Samsung, I could have purchased the SZ. And I hate the idea of getting rid of a fridge only 5 years old...talk about a waste of resources. By the way, customer service at LG was horrible every time I called. Never again.

Kit222 -- Can you be more specific about the doors not staying in place? Do you mean that the right door pops a little bit but then closes itself when you open or close the left door? Or, Do you mean that the right door bounces open and stays open a crack unless you then push it closed? The first is normal. Open your fridge and look at the left door. See the flap/slat along the inside leading edge? When you close the door, the flap goes into a channel that pushes it open parallel to the front of the fridge so it covers the gap between the two doors. That channel locks the flap (and thus the left door) in place. It holds the left door in place when you open and close the right door even though closing the right door gives a little air pressure push. When opening and closing the left door, the the flap bumps against the gasket on the right-side door which makes the right door pop open a teeny bit (from which it should immediately re-seal itself.) Now look at the right door. No flap, right? Nothing to lock the right door in place, right? Nothing to really bump the gasket of the left door. So, opening and closing the left door will make the right one bounce out a little bit but not vice versa. But, that is normal operation. If your problem is that your right door is not immediately resealing itself when you open or close the left door, then something is out of adjustment. That is not "normal." Most likely culprit: your fridge is tilted a little bit forward. That is easy to do when somebody gets a little too anal about leveling the fridge. If that is the problem, just adjust the front leveling feet to give a slight backward tilt. It takes very little adjustment to accomplish this, nowhere near enough to have any adverse effects on anything mechanical (or the levelness of fluids in containers in the fridge if you have that kind of obsession.) Adjusting the leveling feet is covered in the Use and Care Guide that came with your KA.

Can't comment on the GE Profile, but we have had the Kitchenaid for just over a year - no problems, lots of room and looks great too.

Do yourself a favor and also look at the Samsung. Their french door refrigerators are rated #1 in consumer satisfaction by JD Powers for 3 years in a row.

KitchenAid vs Amana, go with the KitchenAid. Actually Whirlpool makes both KA and Amana and Jenn Air and Maytag and others, as well as a few Viking bottom freezers. I personally like the Kenmore Elite Bottom freezer refrigerators which are made for them by LG.

I have the Jenn Air F/D reg depth that we recessed into the wall and had cabinets built around it. We love the Jen-Air!!!

We love the Jenn-Air FD/CD. But KA and Jenn-Air are both made by Amana, so it probably comes down to things like handles and other minor differences inside.

We have been using our JA FD CD for two years and are quite pleased with it. We just bought my folks the LG FD CD and they are very happy with it. The sides of the LG are painted gray which is good for their installation as one side is exposed. Our JA has black sides. The LG has hidden hinges which looks better. The LG has door shelves that go all the way down. As a result, the bottom drawer is not the full depth. Our JA has a full depth drawer which will, for example, fit a large pizza box or large party tray. I don't believe there is any location in that LG that would fit a large pizza box. Not a deal-breaker for my folks, but something to consider. One thing on the automatic door on that bottom drawer on the JA, the darn thing pops off often. Takes two seconds to set it back on, but annoying none the less. Hopefully they have tweaked that.

Just went through this myself and while Whirlpool now owns the companies that produce Amana, Maytag, and Jenn Air - Whirlpool does not yet make those brand models the way their Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid models are made. However, I did see at least one unit, I think it was indeed an Amana, that looked like the Whirlpool. (This was in a SxS and you could tell by the placement of the icemaker for the thru door ice and water.)

I thought that some of the Amana FDs were on par w/ the KA french doors. And, Amana is known for their FD since they were the originator years ago. In the KA models, I noticed the fit and finish to be superior to most other FDs, but it definitely depends on your price point. If you were looking at fridges with the same features and the same price, I'd go w/ the KA.

As far as JD Powers or Consumer Reports, check out the appliance repair forums before you make a decision. Samsung and LG are not highly though of there.
