Need Help Identifying Disease or Pest

Hi Everyone!

I am new hear and saw a wealth of information with solutions to problems with gardens so I signed up and sent some pictures. I have two posts, but this one is first. This is my orange tree.

The leaves are sickly and getting worse. Not sure, but is rust? I live in Southern California, and have taken this over from the previous owner. The tree is out door plenty of sun and about 9 feet tall bushy but beginning to thin as this disease progressed. The oranges tend to be rotted through the bottom too. Two seperate issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you in advance.

Hi Reid: I had similar brown spots on older leaves on my navel orange. Most of the old leaves have fallen but some greener leaves continue to have the brown spots. I just got the house this year and attributed my issues with the brown spots and citrus leaf miner to the underwatering and bugs. (Short sale and previous owner we think gave up) I don't know though as I am pretty new to citrus as this is my first year with a a tree. I hope someone with a bit more knowledge pipes in on the issue. Good to see some other people in SoCal growing citrus.

Also one other thing I forgot to mention is my tree is doing a lot better with proper care and watering. It's not nearly perfect but seems to be producing a decent amount.

I have those spots as well on a thornless key lime. It had them when I got it on the older leaves. None of the new leaves have them and the tree appears fine. I have no idea what they are though.

The squiggly trail on one leaf was caused by a leafminer. The white stuff is from citrus whiteflies and sooty mold, which occurs along with whiteflies. Don't panic. These won't kill your tree. You can hose off the whiteflies. The leafminers are already inside the leaf, so there's not much to do now, but you can control the adult form with sticky traps you hang near your citrus. Can you post a photo here??? Ignoring the simple request wouldn't help much. Get a free account at PHOTOBUCKET, and once you send a few digital photos to your account, they can be linked to here. A picture is worth a thousand words. I have never seen a basil stem peeling.. In another post, someone mentioned green flakes on leaves and once a photo was taken it soon changed the green flakes to aphids.. Neem is a mild insecticide as well as a fungicide which could help. Avoid getting leaves wet with any waterings. Also don't spray any foliar sprays (like fertilizers) on the leaves except a fungicide or insecticide. These must be organic in nature, so you don't get sick from eating the herbs. Give them a few weeks outside in the sun, as no plant will recover a day or two after its been disturbed. If the plants were started indoors and are now outside, they do need some weeks to get used to the new lighting and outside temps.

Ficus galling wasp in Josephiella family. Been in Los Angeles areas for many years and the only remedy is to keep trimmed to lower foliage mass and remove cut foliage and dropped leafs from ground to lower re-infestation rates. However once you have them, you have them. I've had them on my hedge for years, its only unsightly, not life threatening. on the hedges we usually do a vigorous shear right around the time we see the galls appear and this will tend to remove a really good portion of the larvae and subsequent generations from the specific group of plants. https://palmbeachcountyextension.wordpress.com/2012/01/18/josephiella-wasp-galls-on-ficus/

Could be a Buddleia leaf weevil, Cleopus japonicus, considered to be a bioloogical control for the invasiveness of butterfly bushes, particularly in NZ and Australia where the plants are noxious weeds. I am not aware of them being very common in the US but perhaps they are being employed for the same purpose (Buddleia is an invasive species on the west coast and beginning to become one in other areas). And the only garden weevil I am aware of that can fly!

Difficult to say without seeing the underside of the leaf; but it could be greasy spot fungus. Could also be something like spider mites. At any rate, the damage was done in the past; and if your new growth looks healthy you are okay. You should treat your tree once or twice a year with fungicide, topical or systemic; or maybe copper oil. Important thing for fungus is to keep the floor under the tree clean.

Hmm...that looks like what I thought was black citrus aphids on my Ponkan which I wrote about in another post. It is strange how it keeps going after that one tree. I keep spraying and cleaning it off with oil spray or soapy spray but it keeps reappearing. I hope it does not spread to my other trees. The new leaves are beginning to harden up on the tree now so I hope the bug will soon give up on it, but also am afraid it will start looking at the new growrh on my other trees. I treat them all with the sprays. I can't figure out where they are coming from as I don't see any ants nor what about it that attracts them to that particular tree. I have another Ponkan at the other end of the greenhouse and so far that is not attracting them. I think maybe that is because that tree gets a lot of air movement as it is nearer a fan. I keep suspecting my hibiscus may be the host as I usually keep them away from my other plants as they are notorious bug magnets, but even they seem bug free so far and not near this particular tree. Maybe they are in the soil of that particular tree, but I have even drenched the soil and I am still getting the black aphid or black fly back for now about 2 months. It is interesting to me that it likes that particular tree.
