Cheap cable rail system revisited
Comments (31)Hi James, sorry missed your comment. Still good after almost 2 years. I didn't really "turn the corner". My cable runs are all separate (each run starts with a stop and ends with an eye bolt). My corners are 2 posts welded to a large bottom plate. I'll post a pic when i get a chance. If I did it again: supported top rail (wood is now wavy, but only noticeable when eyeing down the rail), lighter duty eye bolts, and I need a support tube at the top of my corner posts (as is, I only tensionned my cables to a few pounds, to get them tighter I need to add a tube between the posts)....See MoreHelp! Comments (14)You've provided pictures that show a lot of traditional woodwork and built-ins (as well as a traditional style exterior), so it's kind of hard to picture it all gone except for the front door, which I'm not sure is even pictured in the photos. But if you like an eclectic look and already have sleek, modern kitchens and baths, there's nothing wrong with making your stairway match the other modern spaces. For me I think it would be too jarring to try mixing Tudor with super modern finishes (and I consider myself pretty eclectic), but I have friends who've mixed similarly disparate styles in their home and they're quite happy with the results. I agree that a designer to help with an overall plan would probably be a good investment....See Moreglass railing vs. cable railing for decking systems in the Northeast
Comments (2)We looked into both of these for our deck a few years ago. Cable railing can be DIY but difficult due to the tension needed to tighten the cables. Also, there may be issues if you have small children using the cables as a ladder. Glass is AMAZINGLY expensive and we had quite a bit of railing area. It also must be all tempered of course. I'm glad fnmroberts posted their photo and that their glass "almost self cleans". Our deck had lots of birds and pine trees around, along with rainy sprinkles followed by dusty winds ugh. We ended up doing painted galvanized livestock fencing. All DIY. DH used various sizes of aluminum C- and U-channel to provide attachment frames to the posts. FYI, these are 4" squares so I'm not sure that they would pass the code test of small-child-head-sized rubber ball. HTH...See MoreCost per Foot of Cable Railing
