Range hood: horizontal vs. vertical ducting

Thinking about going with a Zephyr Tempest II hood: http://zephyronline.com/products/essentials_power/tempest_ii_pro_style.

Question is this. Is horizontal or vertical ducting preferable? Or does it not really matter one way or the other?

It will be ~35 inches above my cooktop. The hood is 24" deep. It seems to me that, with vertical ducting, the blower points directly down at the cooktop and sucks air upward. With horizontal ducting, presumably the blower is not pointed directly at the cooktop, but instead is horizontal to the cooktop. Is that generally correct for horizontal ducting?

It seems, then, that horizontal ducting would not do as good a job at affirmatively sucking the effluent up into the range hood. It seems like more would flow around the edges and escape.

Therefore, it seems that vertical ducting would be preferable, if possible.

Is that an accurate understanding of how horizontal vs vertical works? Or, it terms of effectiveness, does it really not matter?

Thanks.
