eBay question

I was just scrolling through a list of eBay items similar to one I have listed, and I noticed some of them show--in red--how many watchers the item has. Not every item had this feature, and mine does not.

I don't see any mention of this on the listing form, but it must be an option, no? Anyone know how to turn it on? My item has a large number of watchers, and it would be nice if this inspired someone to increase the bid. :-)

I've never sold anything on eBay so I don't know how to activate that feature.

However, I have purchased a LOT on eBay, and I do always look at the items I'm interested in to see how many, if any, watchers are shown. I've never increased a bid -- before the end of the auction -- just because there are watchers. The only way having watchers has influenced me is if the items has a Buy-it-Now option. If it does, and if the BiN price is what I am willing to pay, I just go ahead and hit the BiN button rather than putting in a bid.

Thanks, Lindsay. No BIN option on this one, and the bidding has been excellent--with four days to go. So I can't complain. But it would be fun to display the watchers. I tried clicking through eBay's "contact us" process, but it wasn't exactly user-friendly (possibly intentionally).

For what it's worth, we bought most of our appliances off the internet WITH THE EXCEPTION OF the refrigerator. Our GC, who did not care where we got anything, warned against it, saying that the fewer times and the shortest distance a refrigerator is moved, the better it will operate and the longer its life will be. We got a SubZero and I by golly want that thing to last a l-o-n-g time. We bought it locally. He cautions people not to even move a fridge from house to house. Too easy to mess it up, I guess.

The biggest problem for the buyer is that she only has 45 days from date of purchase to open a case in eBay. If she seems willing to work with you, I would encourage her to wait until close to the deadline and then open a case. That way, she has protection if the item isn't delivered, but you don't have to refund her money right away. However, you risk receiving negative feedback with any delay. You'll have to judge how frustrated or accepting the buyer is with the delay vs. your willingness to lose your money and the item. As other posters have suggested, keeping the buyer informed as to the steps you are taking is always reassuring to the buyer.

Thanks Sandra, My mystery has been solved. The same item is listed twice under two different seller names--although it's the same entity in reality. One auction is the lower Buy It Now price, and one is the higher auction price. (The website price was in-between.) I made a phone call to their brick and mortar store and once they answer the question, I will probably buy it at the cheaper "Buy It Now" price so I have eBay or PayPal protection. Do you think that's the way to go?

Only if you give me a good kick Kim. LOL Like you, I want to be sure I've got something sellable before wasting my time and listing fee money. I just wish our Craig's List was more active here. I need to give it a try too. Since it's free, I have nothing to lose I guess. I also have large appliance items that I need to list in our local classified weekly. It's just getting it done. I don't have a very good excuse not to be doing it either. Ok, I'm bending over then it's your turn. LOL

I'm not sure, but I think the number of watchers will display automatically if there's at least one bid on an item. I could be totally wrong on this.

Fun2Bhere...yes. That's what my search found.

I Googled the question of viewing watchers on an Ebay auction. Looks to be controlled by the buyer.

That link was interesting, Nicole. It'll probably be more interesting when I read it again tomorrow when I'm not exhausted from babysitting two little boys. Tonight I really don't understand it. LOL

My item has 12 bids, so I don't know why it didn't show the number of watchers. But I'm happy. I sold something on Craigslist tonight. :-)
