Amelanchier trees and shrubs

I am currently doing
my homework before possibly planting an Amelanchier tree or shrub next spring.
I am reading up on the matter and visited a nursery earlier today to see things
in real life.

The nursery has an
inventory of about 3 dozens A. shrubs (about 18" to 30" tall) and 4
A. trees (about 8' to 10' tall). My reading led me to expect the A. trees to be
grafted, i.e. A. tree = A. shrub on a stick. But my eyes saw something completely
different. All A. shrubs exhibit the typical shrubby growing habit and all A.
trees exhibit the typical decurrent growing habit. The difference is especially
striking since all trees and shrubs are leafless so their
branching structures are completely exposed.

Anyone care to fill
me in? Thanks!
