New Maine Coon
Comments (4)Maine Coons can have just about any coloring, I think. Sophia isn't pedigreed, but she has all the characteristics of a MC. She's what I think is called "foundation stock," or a naturally occurring MC outside of a breeding program. I don't think they're uncommon. She came from an animal shelter, picked up as a stray as a little kitten. Leslie, I like the name you chose. My friend Marilyn had a dog named Ruffles - because as a puppy she was the same color as the potato chip. . . . Laurel...See MoreSo, What Do YOU Do About Coons And Possums?
Comments (45)I think this is a very tough issue. We chose to live on conservation b/c of the wildlife that we might see. We have lived in our home for over 4 years and I've never seen a 'coon or 'possum in our yard. We did have an armadillo issue for which we hired a trapper to catch and relocate to his acreage (he said that's what he would do and I hope he did). Other then that, I have never had a problem with any animal eating/stealing/destroying anything I have grown. I have a 40-mile roundtrip commute to my office each day. Every day, I see so many poor animals that have been run over. At the rate I am seeing roadkill, I truly question that there are more of them than there are of us. Look at the amount of habitat loss! I also blame some, certainly not all, of the animals that get hit on people not paying attention to the road and/or speeding. One of the main roads leading to where we live is a very dark, narrow, 2-lane road. Because I have seen deer, rabbits, 'coons, etc., I know to drive as slow as I can and pay extra attention to my surroundings. But that is my soapbox for another thread. Personally, I cannot justify killing these animals, unless like Nicki said, it's for food or the animal is suffering. Call me a bleeding heart, but I personally do not think it is right to kill or harm these animals because they eat our veggies. Like Marcia and others have said, my philosophy in my yard is to live and let live. I have enough space and grow enough stuff to be able to share with the wildlife that live around me....See MoreCat Lovers Laundry Room
Comments (38)My cat's litterbox was in the laundry room for all of the 19 years of his life. The last 6 years he had diabetes, so so instead of a normal sized litterbox, we used a box designed for storing rolls of wrapping paper so he could always find a clean spot. I scooped frequently, and I NEVER EVER had a problem with cat odor in clothing. It may be an issue on paper, but IRL, I don't think it's a problem....See Morecat lovers: where did you put the dreadful litter box?
Comments (43)Wow! Thanks to everybody for all of the your creative suggestions!!! I am still debating on the better location. It's either going to be in the garage or the basement bathtub (that no one EVER uses). For what it's worth, we use Tidy Cats clumping litter and it seems to do the best job for us. I also installed one of those intermittent spray air fresheners (runs on batteries and hangs on a simple nail) just over the tub where their box is. That has made a great deal of difference...but It's not enough to make me want a litter box off my foyer anymore! Natal, thanks for asking about the basement. It really got me rethinking my position on that. My reasons for avoiding using it as a litter spot is that since our renovation, the basement is just soooo nice now...I just hate to have that durn box, the scattered litter, the smells, etc. down there! The only place it can go is the tub though. My concern with that is that the tub is acrylic, and I am afraid of getting too many scratches. But, I'm thinking that if I get a couple of throw rugs to line the tub and lay over the edge, it might not be a problem. Now I'll just have to find a way of keeping them from clawing up the leather furniture that's down there...(maybe we'll have to re-try Soft Paws...hmmmm...) Sujafr, Thanks for the warning about losing the fire-rating on the door to the garage. I would not have thought of that in a zillion years. Hmmmmm...now that option does not seem so great. My DH will certainly hate the idea knowing that little tidbit. I'm glad I did not do my usual thing and just impulsively hack a hole in the door! Jeanne gallo--wow!!! That little cut-out for the kitties is awesome! I so want that in my next house!!!! Do you mind if I save a copy of the photos?? Thanks again, everybody! You guys are THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...See Moreblfenton
