Comments (21)Cheryl, Kim, Kat - and everyone...finally had a chance to get pictures taken, when it wasn't too messy! I have shelves, but just don't have them in the cooler yet. The cooler is 10 x 12 x 9' tall. I still don't have the lights installed, didn't get them until right before it snowed...so need to get that done and fill in around the edges with more rock. Comments (54)Hey Marie - what's the name of the granite farm in Lynnfield? Sounds pretty interesting. In June I posted some pics of our new front walkway and yard. I then spent almost every free minute this hot dry summer planting! Totally crazy but I'm too busy with work in the spring and fall so summer it was. A lot of folks here were really helpful in thinking about what to plant. We ended up with a lot of hostas (an old love), a lot of hydrangeas (a new love), a pagoda dogwood (some folks here suggested), some fragrant azaleas, ferns, daphnes, rhodies, and assorted other things. We have lots of shade, though a little more sun than in the backyard so I got a little more adventurous. My question posted here was about what to plant in the bed center stage in front of our house. We never really "decided" but it kind of evolved. We saw a small red weeping Japanese Maple that we had to have (Tamukeyama). Tagged one at Weston's for the fall, but then found one on sale at Stonegate in Lincoln and bought that. That went in the front of the bed to hopefully someday weep over the big rocks along the walkway. I also wanted a green one to weep over the side wall - bought a very small A J Green Cascade. Not sure how long it will take till they're big enough to really see! Finally we were out in the Berkshires and we saw an older (10 years?) PG hydrangea at one of our favorite nurseries that we totally fell in love with. We had no way of getting it back here, so they're holding it until it goes dormant. Hopefully we can then somehow get it into the back of the Subaru! I'll post when we get everything in, though by that time it might not look like much so may wait until the spring. Today I finally finished planting - moved a couple of things from the backyard. Hurray!!!! We've also been trying to get the thousands of acorns up before they're lost in leaves. I spent most of last spring pulling up baby oak trees. I had the landscaper rake a lot of the leaves into the beds, and he raked the acorns in too. This year I think we're doing it ourselves. What do you all do about acorns? We also tried to move our old kayaks into the back yard. Comments (24)Fun, did you have more than one living space growing up? We had a formal living room and a family room so the family room is where our toys were kept. However, we didn't have nearly the same amount of toys as kids do nowadays! The way our family room was laid out, there was a corner where all the toys were kept. I shared an average size room with my sister, so we didn't have much room for playing in there. I'm sure we did a bit but for the most part, we were in the family room when we were young or outside. I also can't imagine having kids' toys in every room. That would drive me nuts! Most of the houses around here have basements or more than one living area so the basements store the bulk of the toys and then the family room, which is typically open to or next to the kitchen is where the main floor toys are stashed. Having four kids has relaxed my anal tendencies but I still go a little nuts with crap laying around. The peninsula in my kitchen becomes the drop zone but I can't stand having that clutter. And dh is the worst b/c he will leave his stuff there and never come back for it but then get annoyed if I move it or ask him to. He's used to clutter from his childhood. I used to have complete order in the house b/f I went to bed, but now I'm so exhausted by then that I have slacked off a bit and then get all stressed when I come downstairs the next morning to clutter and have to clean up b/f I can function. I'm like that with cooking too - I can't start cooking unless the counters are clear, no dirty dishes out, etc. DH looks at me like I have two heads. Am I the only weird one like that? I keep that room at 78F during the day and drop it to 68F at night. Humidity ranges between 55-80% (80% on Saturday and Sunday, when laundry is getting done). Baseline humidity normally hovers at 55ish.
Depending on the sp., they are watered every 1-4 weeks. Most get fed during watering, but I do have a couple of larger ones that have the time released fertilizer mixed into the potting media.
Pests, if present, are treated with an alcohol (1/4 cup), baby shampoo (1-3 tbsp) and water (until bottle is filled) mix in a sprayer. I spray all of the them, and leave the lights off until the spray dries. If it is a bad infestation, BATS is brought out.
Fungal infections are treated with cinnamon and water spray (soak 3-4 cinnamon sticks in a gallon of hot water for a few days, remove the sticks and spray the affected plants until every surface has been treated). If there are large fungal spots, I treat with cinnamon paste (add just enough water to a tablespoon of cinnamon to make it goop together. Apply to large spots before treating with the spray. I leave the paste on for 2 days, then rinse, and treat with the spray. If a large portion of the plant is significantly infected, I take as many cuttings as I can, keeping the best looking ones, and toss the mother plant. Before putting the cuttings in mix to root, I treat the rooting stem with cinnamon paste to deter root rot.
For bacterial infections, I take cuttings and soak them or spray them with Serenade. I toss the mother plant.
For rooting cuttings, I usually just plop into the mix, but if I have a particularly stubborn cutting, I use honey and aspirin water. Boil a gallon of water (in a pot, of course) for 3-5 minutes. While water is still hot, add a cup of honey. Stir well. After the water has cooled to be JUST hot enough to touch, I add 2-3 baby aspirin, wait for them to dissolve, stir well and then wait for the water to cool to room temperature. I swirl the rooting stems in the mix, plop them in my mix, then water the pot thoroughly with the honey aspirin water. It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.
