Talk to me about bedroom curtains

I'm having trouble looking up an example.

I have 2 average double hung windows in a child's bedroom. One curtain panel covers each window, and the room is 10x10- windows are not close to each other, cannot be treated as one.

What is the current trend for open curtains? I like the look where they hang to the floor (no tie backs), but it seems odd if the curtain rod is uneaven over a window with one panel, or way overhangs the opposite side when the panel is pushed to one side during the day.

So my big question would be, in this small child's bedroom, how would curtains be hung over the wondows? With only one curtain, is using tie-back a better choice?
