pond water clear but green
Comments (8)Hi! Thanks for the follow ups! We don't have plants because it is a "japanese garden" and my husband doesn't want any....... I would have at least a lily, but got out voted. The pond has clarified and is looking better. I guess it just takes patience and I will be working on changing his mind about the plants. Chemicals are expensive and I would like it to be more organic. Patty...See MoreThanks to You, my Pond Water is Clear Again

Comments (5)Pat The best way to have clear water in this type of pond is to have 'bare rooted' oxygenators and other 'bottom' plants. (initially weigh them down by tying stones/cobbles to them) When the roots spread across the bottom of the pond they will help 'bind' the clay and have the extra advantage of absorbing nutrients so helping to control algea. It might take a couple of years before you see the results. The clay particles should settle in time. Patience is the key here! DON'T use topsoil as this contains nutrients which will encourage algea. Sue...See MoreHow To Make a Pond Clear?

A couple of other things that I did that helped: I have a lighter floor, I put white stone at the bottom of the pond and this helps a bit. Also, you have to regular water changes, meaning that you need to take out of the pond some of the water. I have a 500 gallon pond and if we were talking aquarium maintenance, the rule of thumb would be a 20% water change every other week. Well, I cannot take out 100 gallons every other week but I probably take out 20-30 gallons every week. I have a separate pump for that and that is what I use to water my plants. I made my own soaker hose, so I just set it up before I get ready to mow the lawn......See Morecoolwater325
