several Sans. w/ new growth since December
Comments (7)Thanks folks, yes, I'm pretty pleased w/ these plants & their recent & surprising growth. Hi Rennet, I've posted there too, yes, it's usually very slow. Tho' it was there I was taught that a Sans. leaf folded in half lengthwise was indicating thirst. I had recently been given one which had that problem & I had to water it every few days 'til the leaves started opening up. It's the Sans. in the 2nd shot, you can see the leaves are still half closed. It seems I've become the foster parent for unwanted &/or donated Sans. & Hoyas for my Indoor Gardening group. 2 of those 3 plants (not the Masoniana) are these 'orphans' good size plants w/ well developed rhizomes, interesting to see. I wonder if anyone here would object to Sans. discussions here, rather than the Sans. Forum? Fellow Sans. growers, what say ye???...See MoreSick brugs with twisted growth ... pictures
Comments (16)Yes, it seems that broad mites are what's affecting the two brugs. This kind of mite is a problem in commercial food crops as well are ornamental plants. From one internet site: "Broad mites inject a toxin from their saliva as they feed. Leaves become twisted, hardened and distorted with bronzed lower surfaces. Young terminal buds can be killed. Leaves frequently turn downward. ... "Both broad and cyclamen mites are too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope. Regular inspection of crops for their feeding damage is the best way to detect infestations. ... "If detected early, it may be feasible to discard a small number of infested plants. ... "A number of different miticides are labeled for both cyclamen mites and broad mites. High volume applications and repeat applications are frequently necessary to achieve adequate control. ..." I think I'll just very carefully dispose of the two affected plants as they would seem most susceptable and hope for the best on the other one. Preditory mites are also listed as helpful in controlling them in green house situations. Since I've been gardening organically for the most part for a few years now hopefully there will be some preditory mites around to take care of any escapees. They must be controlling the spider mites because I haven't seen them in the yard for ages. Thanks again to all that replied. No matter how long we've been gardening it seems we learn something new everyday. Not just one thing, but very often it's several things. Isn't it great that we have these forums with knowledgable people whom we can question. Here is a link that might be useful: Broad mites ......See MoreNew growth on my Sans
Comments (75)Thanks Nancy. Chahinian says it's height tops at 12 inches and leaves are up to 2 inches across. So I guess it's in the Futura-size category but doesn't look like one. Leaves should have a very narrow yellow edge but that will fade to green with age of the leaf. Sure is an interesting sans, and really strange that leaves propagate to Hahnii. Thanks for the extra pics. Russ...See MoreGenerous Sans Group - Sans ‘Green Mermaid’ ???
Comments (48)Sooooo….. Banded Nelsonii looks very similar but they’re not identical or not 2 different names for the same variety/sport/whatever, unlike “Whitney” & “Silver Flame,” I think, having learned they’re equivalent after agreeing to pay for an unseen Silver Flame when told it was “super rare.” And we all know “rare” rarely means rare these days, so I thought this person was reliable. Maybe she didn’t know. Anyhow, I first read about “Green Mermaid” here around the beginning of last year: https://thehouseplantguru.com/2019/08/03/more-exciting-new-houseplants-aglos-and-more/ http://www.turriplantas.com/single-page.php?id=6&lang=en It took me until last fall to find it available, & of course paid way too much, but was obsessed for whatever reason 😏 I have been equally obsessed w trying to find the “Black Princess Sandy” since, but think I randomly just did, & @ Home Depot no less!? I rarely even look at their house plants, but making multiple trips this week due to major diy renovations, I needed a moment’s distraction. Still not entirely convinced because I’ve seen others incorrectly labeled, but doesn’t seem to have near the amount of lighter green Black Coral has. (You can easily find the patent, hence description, but it’s far from one that leads to automatic ID!?) Those 3-4 plants have already given me several babies so I’m definitely not opposed to sharing/trading, esp for the aforementioned Banded Nelsonii, a true Silver Queen, or Singer’s Silver (which has proven even harder to find after mine was frozen), among others, if anyone discussing it here is interested. I have a LOT of aroids, so open to those, Hoya, & well, lots of stuff 😬 I’m horrid at checking messages &/or following up on convos, but will try~just assume it won’t be immediately 🤷🏽♀️...See More- 7 years ago
