they are japanese, right? my favorites. Flaky and good-tasting, but generally small compared to other varieties.

As far as variety, we have been saving back and growing our own for several years. They are all purple inside and outside. They originated as an Japanese variety, yes. They are generally smaller, but this year we averaged almost 4 pound per row foot.

I tried growing them once and did not have luck. They need a lot of sun, and ground hugging vines which are shaded by anything. They are also deer crack so I can't slip them in wherever. By the time the season was warm enough to plant them, they got shaded out by everything else.
