Your top 10 performers, summer 2007
Comments (14)Just to answer mainma's question, I think that everyone has interpreted "top performer" as he or she wishes. Personally, I am after the names of any hostas that people find particularly delightful this year. But please interpret the question as you wish. In my brief experience, I have found that my list of favorites keeps changing, just like these amazing plants. The leaves of many seem to change color and shape as they mature. The fast growers always catch your attention, but there are subtleties in others that can surprise you. For example, when I planted Christmas Tree, I thought how aptly named it was with its pointed leaves. This year, the leaves are rounding, seersuckering (is that a word?), and turning cup-shaped. Delightful! It's also a thrill to see that some of the hostas I have are on some of your lists, which means that you love them as much as I do. Positive reinforcement is always good. It's wonderful to have you share your thoughts. (Must go do some watering!)...See MoreWhat are your top 5 performers this spring?
Comments (9)We had such a crappy spring here with our late snows and way below average temps, I didn't have as many blooms as normal. Coral Sunset still performed perfectly, though. First year for Itoh blooms in my garden. I thought Singing in the Rain would be a favorite but I think I like Strawberry Blonde better--it's a fuller flower and the yellow is very pretty. Raspberry Rumba is a new favorite and the blooms of Louise Marx were truly beautiful and HUGE! Last one is (I think!) Mrs F D Roosevelt. This one didn't have a tag but I'm at least 80% sure is Mrs FDR! I normally don't like floppy doubles that much but that one is worth the effort of staking.......See More2016's Best Performers

Comments (67)Right now, sticking to fuss free roses actually in bloom or about to (re)bloom, *Anna Olivier - perhaps the most reliable ebullient rebloom in the yard - tied for reliable rebloom with *Purpurea (winecup) - flowers are very frequent if also very fleeting; but oh the lovely glaucus foliage! *Savannah and *Plum perfect - both get better every year; I like it that they are foliated all the way to the ground. Savannah's strong grapefruit scent is a bonus; blooms last a long time on the bush before dropping cleanly. *Perle d'Or - used to just tolerate her because of the tendency to chlorotic leaves but dumped lots of gypsum and milorganite on her last year; she's been bettter since - spring flush had bigger flowers and smelled very good this year -- still fairly fuss free There are others I might have mentioned a month ago or a month from now. (maggie for best spring flush; softee for all round performance; star of the republic for most beautiful flower and most haunting scent; yellow mutabilis for that je ne sais quoi -- but this is good for now )...See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
