Planting peonies in late October in zone 6b

I purchased a couple of great peonies this summer and have faithfully kept them alive in their pots waiting to plant them this fall. Well, time got away from me and I now realize I should have planted back in September. Should I go ahead and plant now and just mulch them well or try to overwinter them in pots in the garage and plant in the spring?

Plant them now -- they will be just fine. The peonies that I order online are shipped in mid October so I don't think you're late.

Until the last 5 years peonies were shipped in October by most growers. As long as you can dig a hole you can plant in the ground. Some people in colder areas before you could start requesting a shipping time from some growers would pile stuff hay, boards, plywood, cardboard etc. over the ground where the roots were to go. This would prevent that area from freezing solid. They would then plant the roots when received. Most either did not mulch or at least did not mention if they did. They allowed Mother Nature to provide the mulch in the form of snow.

Okay, so I'm a zone "7", but I doubt our temperatures are too off. I planted black-eyed susan seeds & wild flax seeds on May 25th and already have lots of seedlings in their two pots. They are little, but they're definitely growing. The pots receive full sun outside. I'm not an expert gardener, but I say---Don't give up! I don't think it's too late.

Your zone (defined by the average lowest temps for the last 10 yesrs or so) does not matter. Your prevailing temps at this time and the expected temps for about a month after planting matter. Someone familiar with your local climate should be able to help. Also be wary of the seller's location because this would determine temp conditions while the roses are in transit. Also the ability to copiously water the plants (either naturally or through supplemental watering) for about 2 months after planting is an important consideration. I'm in 6B and have planted as late as Christmas week. However, if you plant in the spring as early as the ground can be worked (which means February here) you should be OK for a regular summer harvest. As a general rule, hardnecks do better in the north and softnecks in the south. But either can be grown anywhere.

Yep, I still have a few peonies coming and I'm in zone 4b. Wouldn't know if from the weather we've been having, feels more like Texas than Colorado! I've actually planted well into November before, they do just fine. I do mulch but only because I don't water that often and we're in an arid area, the peonies don't need it for winter protection.
