Dining room centerpiece ideas

We recently purchased a new dining room table (pictured below). The top
is a dark stained oak (almost black) and the pedestal is a brushed
steel.
I love it and I don't really want to cover it up with
placemats or a table runner, but it is wood and I would like to have
placemats and or coasters nearby to use when people eat there. I was
thinking of maybe using a silver/pewter/stainless tray as a centerpiece
with placemats lining the bottom and putting coasters and a decorative
piece (or pieces) in it. What do you think? Any opinions on this or
ideas for items to include would be appreciated.

Something like this, but with decor that matches my style...
