Why Get a Bosch Benchmark 800 Instead of a Bosch 800?

I have looked at the differences between the Benchmark 800 and the 800 model SHV 68---- and I only find the tines on various shelves to differ but the list price differs by $500. My question is why.

Have you looked at the brochure yet? I find it easier to understand than the website.

I got a Benchmark, but it was the way I could get the features I most cared about in a panel ready. There are so many models and the model numbers don't make it easy to figure out. It's harder still because you will be lucky to find 2 or 3 models on display in most stores. I wouldn't worry about whether it is Benchmark or not -- just try to figure out what features you want and which model has them.

Not a fan of oven thermometers, they're woefully inaccurate and not a good way to judge calibration. Also, 25 degree temperature fluctuations from the set temperature are normal in any oven. It's also normal for the keypad/display to be warm to the touch, especially at higher temperatures and prolonged operation. Service call was probably not the best idea. You need to start by trusting the oven. Bake some stuff in it and let it operate as designed. Only if you are getting poor results should you call for service, and only after you follow the recommendations in your manual for calibration. There is a very high probability that the oven is operating normally, and if it is, the technician may decline your warranty and charge you the full service call fee. KitchenAide like many brands are part of a conglomerate that offers relatively similar products with feature differences at significantly different price points. The conglomerates can sell the brand equity out for a 'fast buck' which unfortunately is common today with everything being so short sighted on the next Wall Street quarterly report with executive bonuses paid based on stock price. KitchenAide mixers are one of the prominent victims of this short sightedness. My old 5qt 300 Watt mixer is ~35 years old and is much better than the newer cheaply constructed ~600Watt ~6qt models of today with their plastic gears and other trade offs. With these conglomerate companies and brands, there are still some "sweet spots" for both price and quality. One particular good stand out was my KA Oven that exceeded all my expectations for cooking quality. It never had a problem the entire time I owned it so, what else is there to say?

I'm wavering between the NIT 800 series and the NITP Benchmark series also. The only difference that I can see is that Benchmark has the flex induction for $500 more and requires a 50 amp circuit instead of 30A. Both recognize and adjust to different pot sizes ("Pot Sense") and both have shut off timers for each individual hob. Combining two hobs to form a single larger heating surface seems kinda cool. However, I have grill and griddle inserts to replace two burners as a single surface and didn't use them (other than for additional counter space) after the novelty wore off. Which was quickly. My sister and her husband used her griddle and grill inserts a lot when they had 4 children at home. After that, eventually never. If I confirm that the only difference is flex induction, then I'm going to save myself $500.

Thank you, SJ. One correction on Frig: it's an 11" (not 10"). There are just soooo few reviews for the 800 or the 800 Flex. on the internet - strange. Does the Bosch have a low, low simmer/melt function - does it get low enough to say, leave and softly melt butter/chocolate and IS the lowest setting sufficient to be used as a "keep warm" feature when needing to hold a dish in a pan/pot for a few minutes? I THINK the Frig. has that. Does yours have the Auto Chef? Do you like/use it? Some references here seemed to be negative about it.

I did a comparison at the Bosch site and the SHX8PT55UC; SHXN8PT55UC; and SHX68T56UC are all the same dimensions, which looks like they are all US made. Main difference was the water softener and interior light on the first model and the folding tines on the top rack of the first two models. I don't know what happened to the SHX 7 models that were spoken of in older posts.

I don't know where you are shopping, but no one has all the models. An appliance store that caters to builders and remodelers is probably the best bet for finding a Benchmark and they may be able to order the others if you want to order something you haven't seen. It is possible that a model has been dropped along the way -- have you loooked at any online vendors to see if they have it (AJ Madison, Yale Apppliance, etc.) or asked about the availability of the 7 model you are interested in? I even called the BSH showroom out in LA to ask questions about the models - the guy I talked to was very helpful.

I found a 7 or 800 series at Best Buy that would have been fine if I hadn't needed the panel ready -- but I wasn't ready to give that up. That would have saved me $400 on the sale price, but I bought when I got a $200 rebate on the Benchmark so the net was $200 more than the Best Buy model and $100 more than the lower Benchmark (was $200 less but only had a $100 rebate). For a $100 net difference, DH wanted the quieter rating. We got the interior light and the control panel strip is metal rather than plastic (you may get buttons on the non-Benchmark rather than the flush touch controls).

I have looked for the comparison chart I know I saved, but I can't find it right now. If I find it I will come back.
