Sure could use the great advice you all give. Our original carpet in the entire house (2 stories and 7 area's) needs to be replaced. Kids have grown and gone and we still have a few cats and dogs. We are considering cheap with Empire Carpet and A LOT more money with Costco but it looks like better carpet. HELP AND THANK YOU

What is it you want to know? #1 rule is stick with 100% nylon. NO poly at all! This is, of course, you're not doing a high end wool carpet and it doesn't sound like you are. Don't let any salesperson tell you poly is as good as nylon now. Look for a stainmaster logo. Do your homework. Look at the back of the sample for ratings, warranties, etc. You usually get what you pay for. If you want cheap carpet and don't mind replacing it a few years, ok. If you want a carpet with longer life and better warranty you'll have to pay for it. Bend a carpet sample with the backs touching. Can you see the carpet backing? Not a good sign if you can. Do you want a cut pile or loop, a pattern or plush. Pattern carpet cost more to install (at least we charge more to install pattern).

GET A GOOD PAD. It can make or break the life of our carpet. DH normally recommends a 7/16" inch pad....I'll have to verify that with him later tonight but I think that's right. Since you have pets in the house the salesperson might try to talk you into a moisture barrier pad. There's a lot that goes into whether that's a good idea for your particular home or not. Don't depend on the salesperson to tell you, Google it. I don't know all the answers but installation of a water barrier pad is very important. Ask that the seams and parameter be taped with duct tape.

If insulated properly, and that includes opening up the floors as well as walls and ceilings, then no, there is no real difference in the temperature of the floors. But, doing this properly is a big, complicated, job. There are certain building codes that cover habitable space vs. storage space, and while insulation is covered under those, there are also a whole other host of issues that need to be addressed in order to do this safely and legally. Any job not done correctly, and permitted and inspected, will be a detriment to the value of the home rather than adding any value. Not to mention the fact that if it's not done in a safe code compliant manner, would you really want to have you or your children occupy it? In the event of a fire in the garage below, proper separation of the garage and living spaces as well as proper egress windows could mean the difference between life and death for your loved ones.

We recently had the Mohawk Smart Strand Forever Clean PET (polyester fiber) carpet installed. There was very little off gassing, so it never had that (toxic) new carpet smell. We don't currently have a pet, but our preschooler is messier than the dogs ever were, and cleanup is a breeze. It is pleasant underfoot. We did get #8 pad as well.

I'm getting ready to put new carpet in our guestroom and was doing online research before going to the carpet store. The Mohawk website isn't very user friendly IMO, but here's a page I found that has a lot of clickable links with more information About Mohawk Carpet From what I can tell, Perfect Passions II is made of nylon, not polyester (recycled plastic bottles). The above link will get you to a Weardated Allure brochure if that helps. I installed Mohawk carpet in our bedroom 6 years ago and it still looks great, but it's not a high-traffic area. I wanted to get more of the same for the guestroom, but my paperwork says we have Mohawk Voyager and I can't find that type anywhere on the internet, so I assume it has been discontinued. I'm pretty sure that the salesman told us it was made of corn. It's super soft. I have wall-to-wall carpet in my formal living room and all bedrooms. I like the way it looks and feels and it's soooooooo easy to take care of. I invested in a carpet cleaning machine and try to clean each room 2 or 3 times a year. That and weekly vacuuming is all it takes to keep it looking good. I use Bissell OXYgen2 for spot cleaning. Good luck with everything. ETA: Upon further research, I have learned that Wear-Dated Allure is indeed made of polyester fibers, not nylon. I'm sorry for the confusion. Apparently, the Wear-Dated line is made of nylon, but Allure is an exception. I hope someone from Mohawk is reading this. I find their website to be confusing and not user-friendly. It kills me that I gave incorrect information in this post, but I got the information from the manufacturer's website. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

I had called the better business bureau to find out if there were any bad reports on some tile or carpet business, and during our conversation, the person at the BBB told me to avoid Empire (NJ). A lot of complaints about them apparently.

generally speaking...local Mom & Pop shops that have been around for a while will not stear you wrong...like Monica said, don't let a sales person pressure you. The sales person should asses your needs then make recommendations.

Regarding poly vs nylon...if a client is trying to economize you can use a poly in a low traffic area and nylon in high traffic. Practical color, density and twist make a difference for the lasting appearance & durability too, not just the fiber. If the budget allows, nylon or wool are usually the best bet. Find a slaes person you feel like you trust since there are quite a few variables

Monica has given a lot of useful information.It is better if you buy a carpet that has a stainmaster logo on it.Their warranties are transferable and they have long durability.

Yeah, I'd avoid Empire, they have a very bad reputation in our area too. Actually my daughter and SIL had a rep over to get a quote and he WOULD NOT take no for an answer and leave their house until they signed a contract for purchase. My daughter had to eventually tell him leave or she'd call the police. It was quite scary for them. Even Home Depot would be a better option than Empire!

Lukkiirish that is terrible. Recently I went did a color consultation where they used Empire. The installation looked lousy and I would have never recommended the particular carpet for the type of use and abuse it will get on the main staircase.

That does not surprise me Kaleidoscope, their experience was horrible AND someone from my daughter's work had a similar though not as severe experience. This was several years ago though when they were brand new first home owners.

Ask for their best installer. People do it all the time. You might have to wait a few days (maybe a couple weeks) longer but you'll be glad you did. There are a lot of carpet installers who have no business installing carpet :o
