Your Dream Garden
Comments (24)Ohhhh - such nice dreams. I was going to say I have my dream, which is a semi-blank canvas. I do like creating, however, that having been said: I went to Ireland in 2005, and while the yards, private and public gardens where wonderful.....but my favourite was Ardgillan Demesne, north of Dublin. I've added a link below. If your turn 180 degrees from the 1st pic, you are looking a huge lawn, rolling down to the Irish sea - spectacular. There is a huge Monkey Puzzle Tree in front of the house(?), barely visable. What they don't show you, sadly, are the wonderful gardens behind the house. I can't find my pics either. :-( It is full of wonderful stone walls, stone sheds and greenhouses. The rose garden is wonderful, and my favourites were the very old espaliered apple trees, full of fruit!!! Just pushed all of my buttons!! Nancy. Comments (19)This is a thought provoking and valuable thread. Although I highly doubt we'll be in this house when all of our landscaping has reached full maturity, we did plan things for the future. All of the trees were planted taking into consideration their ultimate size and suitability for where they were planted. Perennials and shrubs are mostly in their places now and should be happy for decades. Our hardscaping work has been built to last. Our house was built in 1938 and has seen landscaping come and go. By the time we bought it though, it was so neglected (and paved over) that we had to raze everything to bare dirt. The only shade that existed was that thrown by the house. Beds that are in full sun now will eventually be left to part sun/full shade as the trees mature. Right now, our irrigation system is designed to support maximum happiness in full sun conditions. But we use minimal water to support my habit. It's a series of drip lines and directional sprinklers that can be moved around as things progress and extablish. This elaborate system requires maintenance right now, but eventually only a small amount of our space will require them at all. I can expect several more years of experimentation until my sun/shade patterns are finally set. By then, it will probably be time to hand over the shovel to the next owner. I can tell you this though, our next (and probably last) home will have all the bones in place. At my age, I never ever ever want to undertake a project like this again. If you hear me say otherwise, feel free to slap me until I come to my senses. Steven...See MorePlanning My Dream Garden - Where to Start?
Comments (5)Consider a landscape designer. This person is not an architect. They should be able to provide you with a scale drawing, and a detailed planting list. Pick one that has lots of experience, been doing it a while. The cost of their services should be less than the architect. Whomever you hire should have knowledge and experience with the plants - what does best in your area, you light conditions, your soil type. You can do your own soil test - from the extension office. Comments (42)Wow again MrC. I'm tired just thinking about all those lilies. I'm planning to convert the 24 ft diameter above ground pool area to raised bed gardens. so far the pool is gone and 3 out of 5 of the raised beds are constructed. Still need to distribute the rocks that ringed the pool into each bed and order the dirt to fill each one. I'm also finally creating a compost heap. This soil is so sandy. It really needs compost and lots of it. I'm getting a little bird crazy. My SIL in South Carolina has attracted blue birds to her back yard. so far there have been 3 fledged families. I would love to do the same but worry that blue birds are not prevalent in this area. Last I want to get climbing roses established against the shed wall. My hope is to construct trellis' similar to those on Nantucket. I painted the shed wall today and will transplant a couple of climbing roses I've been nursing along. Finally, can you belive this weather!!!!!! Yikes!!!! Everything is gonna bloom at the same time!!! BTW This year's tomato plants are coming along. I chose 2 varieties of green heirlooms along with 4 others. Can't believe I missed "Ruth's Perfect"--- next year for sure!!!...See MoreLaLennoxa 6a/b Hamilton ON
