Removing ceiling lath & plaster when putting up new walls
Comments (2)If the new walls are not bearing walls and the ceiling is firm I would not disturb anything! Why make more work for yourself. The new walls just need to remain upright and stable and screwing them through the top plate to the joists or blocking between joists is fine. Drill hole for wires into top plate,go up in attic, install your J-boxes and drop wires down....See Moreplaster and lathe removal and replacement
Comments (4)We lost too much plaster (wood lathe) 2ndary to flooding & renovations to our home - hubby is adamant about replacing the ceiling with plaster - I searched and researched and of course - difficult to find people to buy into my train of thought - everyone believes "just rock it" is the answer. Perhaps they haven't lived in a plaster home & enjoyed the soundness of the plaster - Largest area lost is 12'x20' ceiling in living room (master bedroom above) I did see the blue board, the green glue etc. etc Found the best solution may be roxul & 5/8" rock hung from resilient channel (RC) which would be the most effective & cheapest way to try to get the acoustics we had w/plaster - I'm curious about "Two coat plaster is still done in a few areas. Gypsum backer is used (3/8 thick) and then 1/4 inch of base and 1/8 of finish. The sound properties are very similar to a full 3 coat plaster job. " I'm in Fairfield Cty Ct - and have a great painter on the job that does some plaster - perhaps he could do the ceiling this way vs. the roxul, 5/8, RC - I would still put up the Roxul as I've already purchased it & it's on site unless of course there is some reason I should not utilize it. whew Thanks Eileen...See MorePlaster and lath ceiling
Comments (12)How large of an area are we talking about? If small then tear out and drywall are your friends as far as economy goes. But I'm of this camp. "Drywall is lifeless compared to the undulations of plaster. Do the right thing by your old home." 2 links that might be of interest since you'd like to DIY. http://starcraftcustombuilders.com/HowToFixPlasterWall.htm#.VI4VIyx0zGg http://www.amazon.com/The-Hillman-Group-41994-Plaster/dp/B000BQP2YM Repair what's salvageable of the existing plaster. Brown coat the exposed lath and finish coat the whole thing. Be sure to do any demo you plan like removing the 1960's paneling at this time also. And please don't simply cover it up with " really cool sustainable bamboo mat flooring " Cheap is one thing but it's also another thing too. Comments (7)We are considering rehabilitating my husband's grandmother's 1850's home. I was told it's best to retain the plaster and lath so that the wooden baseboard trim lines up correctly. Also, I'm told it muffles noise better. But I guess if you busted it out, you could place the drywall at the correct depth? And insulate behind? The plaster ceilings have leaked, and refinishing all the plaster is going to run $2,000 per room. A home rehabilitation person said not to blow in insulation with plaster walls, as it is a magnet for moisture. Is that true? Good luck, Leanne. Hope you enjoy your lovely home!...See MoreAnglophilia
