To Spray or not to Spray?
Comments (102)Fungicides are the least toxic of the horticultural chemicals. Yes Daconil can burn foliage but only under certain conditions (when plants are dried out and temps outsides are hot). I've never had it burn any of my roses because I'm certain to water them beforehand, only apply it early in the season, and limit spraying to the early morning or evening hours. In fact, its a whole lot less harmful to the foliage than lime-sulfur, which is an "organic" fungicide. The only toxic side effect I've read in the literature about Mancozeb is that there is a slightly higher incidence of eye trouble in agricultural workers who routinely work around it. These people don't have the advantage of goggles, a respirator, and protective clothing. They are also exposed to much higher levels and much more often. I've never noticed a marked decrease in insects from the use of fungicides. A bit of perspective. This weekend I visited my 70 year old mother. Before leaving for what is a three hour drive I picked a new blossom of PRETTY JESSICA, a gorgously fragrant new English Rose that I acquired last year. As I was driving I'd occasionally pick up and smell the rose. The powerful Damask fragrance kept me alert and happy during the drive. Such a treat! The flower was still fresh and beautiful when I arrived. My mother immediately wanted me to buy her the rose when I let her smell the flower. I had to gently let her down. "Pretty" as PRETTY JESSICA is, she needs spraying and mom's health won't allow her to put in the necessary work to keep the English Rose looking good in her Tidewater VA garden. My mother was profoundly disappointed. Her rose garden is organic, and lovely as the Chinas and Teas are, they just don't have that certainly "quality" that we've come to expect from the English Roses (and Bourbons, Hybrid Perpetuals, Portlands; all of which are disease mongers). I'm hoping mom will be more pleased as her new garden develops. Duchesse de Brabant and Belinda's Dream in particular should please her. "It is beauty that nourishes the soul." Comments (13)I'm just a SAH... he, he. I don't have kids, I have 2 dogs & I think they may be worse! I do work part time, but mainly on Saturdays & sometimes throughout the week. My DH works construction out of state & is only home 5 days out of 15. I have a schedule made up... I feel like I need this to keep me motivated. I tried FlyLady, but that program didn't fit my/our life. I made my first schedule up & have since revamped it, I found it didn't work for me either. My new one is working out great, except for the days my DH is home, I try to do what I can, but I feel spending time w/ him is more important than a tidy house. With my old schedule, I would vacuum all carpets one day, sweep all hard floors one day, etc... I found that this didn't have the outcome I was expecting... I would look around the kitchen & the floor would be sparkling, but the counters were cluttered, the table needed to be wiped off, etc... So, with my new schedule, I do one room, plus other tasks, like laundry, Mon-Thur & various, less used rooms once a month on Fridays, I also run the dishwasher on Fridays. Weekends are for miscellaneous stuff that needs done & trash taken out. I've found this schedule has each room entirely clean all at once & I don't get sidetracked by little stuff, I save the Misc. stuff for the Misc. days. This has been working well for me, I have been 95% on schedule, if I don't get something done I force myself to get that thing & tomorrow's thing(s) done tomorrow! :)...See MoreNew Monday post for us
Comments (13)Hello Again, I have dropped in on the other topics several time but just was overwhelmed when I took a look over here...you all have been busy! Lillyjane... glad to have you here and it sounds like you took a page from my life history and added your name, with the exception of working in a kitchen....I don't like to cook! I do like to decorate with food and along with two other friends did about 10 years of catering to raise money for different charities. That I like! Guess we all have a niche even in a kitchen. They cooked - I decorated. I can really related to "finishing your basement!" What a project....with lots of stress but good things at the end. Doing Christmas Eve here at home, we added a small table to the kitchen area and have decided to add an island. Have you looked at the price of islands? Price shock here, so we are doing our own. This will mean more room for my craft area. Can't wait to start! So..what is Winter sowing? Next to painting my garden and pond are my faves. We have changed a lot in the last two years and more areas are becoming rock gardens. But I still love the colors all season long. Luvs...it is so great that you are taking the first steps to loosing weight, so how are you doing or is asking putting pressure on you? Hope not! I am also glad to hear that your ex neighbor is doing well. Punk...it sounds like you have been under a lot of stress as well. Is the new girl working out? Hope so. It also sounds like several of you should try out for the next Demolition Derby. Glad no one was hurt! Anj...I'm worried about you girl! You need to practice saying "NO." Stand in front of the mirror and just say no...very gently and then add volume. Then, right in the middle of some family gathering just pop out with "NO!" You will get instant quiet. It is magical what that little word can do. Coming back to reality, my DR had me make a list of who I had to care for and in order of importance. That was a hard one and then he pointed out that I missed one very important person, myself and that I should be at the top of the list. How can I care for other if I don't care for myself first. Take care of yourself Anj! Paintingfool...welcome back! The south has really taken a hit with the cold weather while we are having record breaking warm weather and buckets of rain. We have already passed our usual rainfall for the month of Jan. As I posted before, your DGS is so luck to have you as his GM. Not many would have researched his health problem and found the answer as you did. You rock girl! We were gone for a week and instead of putting up sheet rock on the walls, we put plywood on the cathedral ceiling. And added to my cooking detail..have I mentioned I don't like to cook...OK..I have..lots of times...anyway, I was the one who got to turn the handle on the "thingy" that lifted the sheet of plywood up to the ceiling. It was so easy I didn't even tone one single muscle. I did their 18 steps up and down several thousand time and actually lost 4 pounds. Can't walk but lost the weight. So, home again and have a new family member. Simba joined us last Sunday. He is the cutest little cat, small face and big body. We lost our outdoor cat the first of Dec. Hard to believe but our DGS turned 18 on the 11th. They grow so fast. He is a senior and is taking a college class to speed things up. Haven't done any painting, that's getting to be the usual not the unusual. Have had this cleaning bug. Actually gave away two boxes of books. My shelves almost look empty and that a nice new look! Have what few Valentine decoration I have all out and up. Just did my yearly check up and was told that my RA is why I am so tired and although I wouldn't call it depressed, my DH thinks I am. The DR., agreed with me but there isn't much that can be done. No magic pill or shots...did I say shots...I hate shots more than I do cooking... and you all know that story! Well...I'd better get this tired (hehe) body moving and finish the New Year cleaning, that's what my DGM used to call it, you always start with a clean New Year. Be safe! Comments (1)I am a new-ish gardener and planted tomatoes in cups today to be transplanted to containers. I know I am getting a late start for transplanting but I did not have the tools to do indoor sowing. I would have probably planted 2 weeks ago but I saw the forecast for the cold front week and then there was the actual cold front. Even though I just planted tomatoes and will be planting peppers, eggplants, basil and cucumbers soon I have been quite busy with gardening related activities for cold weather crops like peas, lettuce, spinach, chard, brussels sprouts and other plants. The plants themselves are doing so-so, I don't know if I they are just slow because of the cooler weather or if I did something wrong. Since the weather is supposed to be mild for the next couple weeks hopefully the plants will take off and if they don't then my conclusion is going to be that something went wrong with the plants....See MorePawprint
