I was looking in New York Times online archive when discovered
what amounted to the equivalent of flame war by 1939 standards.
this so called controversy about what ingredients should be included in beef stew concerned whether carrot and turnip were ingredients worthy to put in beef stew or were ingredients so lowly to starve off hunger and to be used to feed horse, pigs and cows. Original article New York Times July 16 1939p 60. that sparked argument in Times.
responses coming following from the article
July 23, 1939 p E9.
august 20 1939 SM 9
