Is This a True Xmas Cactus
Comments (17)Depending where one looks for information on these guys you'll get different answers, so many of them are synonymous with others it can be quite confusing. The powers that be keep playing musical chairs with genera so what's in one genus today might be somewhere else tomorrow. The leaf segments in the above picture are what I think of as a Christmas cactus, although the color of the flower differs from the old time Christmas cactus I'm familiar with. There are so many named and unnamed cultivars on the market today that are hybrids. If anyone knows someone still growing the old timer you should beg a piece. Most of these Holiday Cactus can be made to bloom throughout the year if you can control things like temperature and light. A...See MoreAiling Thanksgiving cactus
Comments (6)OK then, if it's in bud, don't do much to it & pls. do not move it or even turn it in place, both can cause the buds to drop. Woody lower stems are not a problem or abnormal, it's simply a function of age (the base of my plant is like that, I completely ignore that aspect). Reddish or purplish leaves are also not a problem, it's the plant reacting to strong light (mine grows on edge of west window). In summer, all the tips that are directly in the window get reddish purple, doesn't harm the plant at all. If there are any thin, dried out branches, pls. cut them off, they're dying & won't recover. After the bloom (maybe next Spring) I'd put the pot back into plastic pot (I think clay pot will dry the plant too fast, these are not desert plants, they're tropical). Don't do anything special, keep up w/ the watering (maybe once a wk 'til blooming). After the blooming is over, withhold water for a month. The plant will look like crap, but will then come back & winter well for you. The one thing you might try is giving it dilute black coffee (no milk, no suger). The coffee is acidic & this plant likes that (in moderation); say 1/2 coffee & 1/2 water. This plants needs very fast draining mix, I usually use at least 1/2 as much perlite or pumice as soil. Potting mix w/ perlite is preferable for these than C&S mix, which I didn't know for a long time....See MoreWhat's ailing my tri-color jade?
Comments (11)Well- it's hot and humid again today. 92, feels like 98 with 60% humidity. I'm sure my jades are enjoying it as much as I am - not much - but I guess that's called summer. I may have been impatient with the plant I had previously checked and repotted. It does have a couple of new roots starting. The other ailing plant did not appear to have any! Both are in smaller pots and are relaxing in bright shade. I think I can move them inside by an east window, but I'll have to check the light since those windows are recessed about a foot and will be getting hurricane shutters put on them soon. My south windows get too hot. They are in a 1-1-1 mix of turface, fir bark and perlite - all sifted and washed. So now I'll leave them alone and hope for the best! Thanks for the help!...See Morerooting a xmas cactus segment?
Comments (10)Well, he was being good having learned his lesson last month after repeated squirts in the face from the water bottle..but now he realizes that as long as I'm asleep at night, he can do what he pleases. The shower/water method won't work..my cat loves water..he sits on the side of the tub when ya take a shower, sometimes gets in! Plays in the toilet..actually goes in it..sleeps in the sinks..etc. I won't use the cayenne pepper though. I think I'm gonna spray bitter apple spray just on the rims of the pots, maybe that'll keep him away. Has no effect on my puppy, but may work with the cat. No I have all plants that are toxic up where they can't get to them. Thanks guys, I really appreciate it, I will take the bud off and let that baby root! ooh more xmas cacti!! yay!!
