My hosta garden is ready for fall
Comments (10)Hey, Brandy! Your hosta are doing well overall...good growth...I really like the " look at me" flower scape on your Fire Island. It's so out there. I just wanted to say how yummy your tomatoes look too. :-). Did you BLT them or salad? HH...love, love your greeter! Can't get enough of these pics. Still pondering Paul's Glory.... I thought my Whirlwind was whirling down for the summer, what with yellow leaves n all, but all it wanted was more water! Looks great now but thanks to my failure to provide sufficient water, the plant is reduced by four leaves...a significant reduction considering its slow growth in my garden. Otherwise, all good heading into fall....See MoreMy Fun Fall Hosta Starting Project
Comments (9)On the subject of planting leaves. I did this same thing this summer. I had been to my local nursery for the late season sale and spotted an American Hero that appeared to be sporting. Sadly I already had one in the ground at home so i passed over it in favor of expanding my collection with many others. The plant in question had two "crowns" (correct term for hosta divisions?) that were fully two inches taller than the rest of the regular white centered leaves and were dark green with even darker green margins. I told myself it was probably just reverting and i probably wouldn't want that particular plant anyway. Of course i looked it up when i got home and discovered American Hero to be a sport of Revolution(a plant with even more white than AH). I went back the next weekend, found it and bought it. I brought it home with the idea of splitting the larger division off and planting it separately. Imagine my shock when the two tops simply popped off with the slightest manipulation of the crown and fell to the ground. I was somewhat depressed and just put the AH in the ground hoping that what was beneath those tops will return in the spring and just set the two amputations off to the side. The next day i returned to the scene of the crime and as I was examining the amputated crowns I noticed some cracks in the soil near my Whirlwind and thought what the heck. Stuck em in the cracks, packed em in, gave em a drink and proceeded to watch them for two months in which they never wilted and even outlasted many of my non-abused plants when the colder weather showed up. Needless to say I was impressed and have my fingers crossed for next spring. So, no, Sheila you are not alone P.S. my mom is from Bloomfield and my dad hails from Yankton....See MoreHow can I help my Mother get over losing my Father suddenly?
Comments (7)Karen, if your family is anything like mine, until you lost your Dad, you hadn't seen a lot of loss or grief for someone. It's hard to watch it (and experience it!) I think I'd probably just call my Mom, if I were you, and ask her to your house to eat, to go out, to watch activities that the kids are involved in, etc. Let her know that it's okay to not be in the mood to do anything. Also let her know that you really WANT her to be involved in whatever your family is doing. My Mom has spent the night at my house two nights since my Dad passed away. Get this, I had to break my ankle and have surgery in order to get her to do that! LOL I kid her that having surgery is the only way she'll stay at my house overnight! LOL We live 80 miles apart and I call her everyday - usually twice a day. We've talked more by phone in the last four years than we'd ever talked in our lives. My DH and I and our kids and grandkids make it a point to at least spend part of every holiday at her house. She likes to stay home, so we go to her. I DO feel sometimes at her house, when everyone is there but Daddy, that there's the proverbial "big gray elephant" in the house that no one mentions. You know what I mean? Everybody is highly aware of the fact that he's no longer with us, but nobody wants to talk about it for fear of upsetting somebody else! Now, when it's just my Mom and me together, we cry (and laugh!) when we feel the need to. That's something else that I haven't thought to mention. Let her cry when she feels the need to cry. I guess you don't have to say a word, just be there for her. She and I both have talked about the fact that Fathers are the HEAD of most families. Then, as women, we both agree that the Mothers are the HEART of the family. Maybe you can reassure her in that way that she IS a vital, needed part. Comments (9)cold is surely not your issue ... i SUSPECT all you should be concerned about.. in your zone.. might be too much water accumulated in a pot with a dormant plant ... media is a water management system.. and you dont mention what type you have in your pot ... i will defer to anyone more local to your area ... you could in your area.. literally.. leave them on the driveway all winter.. dont mess around with over thinking it all and taking them indoors ... one key to success.. is to keep them dormant as long as possible.. and a garage.. even un heated.. could easily be a zone or 2 warmer ....and it does no good to have them popping up weeks early ... lets see how close i got to the real answer .. lol .. ken...See Morenewhostalady Z6 ON, Canada
