For roses, the union is most commonly at soil level or just above -although in the colder zones it is recommended to plant the union a few inches below surface so that some part of the cane above the rootstock can survive a severe frost. However, even in milder zones, there may be some advantage to planting deeply so that roots will develop both above and below the graft. Roses grafted on briar rootstock establish very much faster than roses on their own roots but own root roses are said to have an indefinite lifespan as compared to grafted. Planting deeply can be a way of having the best of both worlds. Trees, on the other hand - do not take well to having their bark underground. A nurseryman friend tells me that one of the most common reasons for newly planted trees failing is that they are planted too deeply.

I had the seeds to plant fall crop of greens, I dont' think I will with the major bug problems this year. I'll save row covers for spring. Caterpillars destroyed calendula seedlings, and have been isssue on other plants as well. I think I'll remove everything from veggie garden, till( if I can borrow one) or double dig. Then I'll keep garden free of all weeds, leaf debris, etc. Keep grass mowed...and pray. Just this morning, found a new bug in flower/herb garden: some kinda worms in webs at the flowering ends of my applemint...there goes my mint tea..yuck. Do yo all use insecticides? I think I musta put up a sign in my yard that said: organic gardener : every bug that exists welcome!!!!

I'd like it if we celebrated Thanksgiving in October like our Canadian neighbors. After all, we're on the same continent LOL. Then it wouldn't seem like such a gosh darn rush of the season to me. The below sure makes sense as to why Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving earlier, at least to me: "Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various different dates throughout history. By the mid 20th century, the final Thursday in November had become the customary day of Thanksgiving in most U.S. states. It was not until December 26, 1941 however that President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after pushing two years earlier to move the date earlier to give the country an economic boost, signed a bill into law, with congress, making Thanksgiving a national holiday and settling it to the fourth (but not final) Thursday in November.[8] Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century, at which time it was typically held on November 6. After the end of World War I, Thanksgiving Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies were usually held during the same week. To avoid the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date."
