thanksgiving cactus bonsai?
Comments (1)First, do you otherwise do bonsai - have you ever done any? Second - are you familiar with growing succulents like that cactus, and that cactus in particular? There's a lot to growing bonsai and starting out with a nontraditional plant is going to be a whole other story!...See MoreCrossing Christmas Cactus with Thanksgiving Cactus
Comments (52)Thanks, puglvr! It's maybe not as bloomy as the parents, but once I get it repotted and pruned next spring we'll see how it does then. If it doesn't shape up, out it goes. juliana, maybe we would have to do it after you get back, or try to fit in a mailing before you go. I have to look at the weather before May 15, but sometimes it can work earlier than that. Just remind me about it in April and we'll go from there. I'm thinking of repotting all my cc's and giving them a prune job, so it wouldn't be hard to put a couple of the trimmings in an envelope. Anyway, earlier would fit better for me if the weather cooperates. Once it's nice out, I had better be done with the fussing with the house plants because the acre veg garden calls....See MoreThanksgiving Cactus and Christmas Cactus ; rootbound or not ?
Comments (5)Rhizo & Toni , it was interesting to hear your opinions on this. The last 3 years I have grown my Schlumbergeras ( Thanksgiving Cacti and Christmas Cacti ) "as you grow house plants" rather than "as you grow cacti". So I have potted them up every year and also fertilized in summer ! This has resulted in a lot of growth and also a lot of flowers. Because I read "here and there" that these plants are supposed to be "potbound" , I'm sort of waiting for things to go wrong , because of the way I grow them ... What I can say for sure is that potting up has not reduced flowering ! New plants Fall -05 bloomed again for Easter -06 after beeing potted up in February. A 2 1/2 years old Christmas Cactus ( from single segment cuttings Summer -04 ) potted up in July -06 are now full of flower buds. I had not expected any flowers at all since I potted it up so late ( had first decided not to , because of this "potbound-thing" but changed my mind because the plant had grown so much ). Now the "all-over-effect" / the "general health" of the plant in the long run , when growing them "more intensivly" , that I can not be sure of ... So far it looks good , but it would be interesting to hear more about what you all think about this. To me this is THE QUESTION , when it comes to Schlumbergera !...See MoreMy new Thanksgiving cactus
Comments (8)TJ, that's a beauty. Growhappy provided you with some good links of info. I'm afraid to go the the shops these days. It seems everywhere I go there are holiday plants popping up all around me. How does one resist all that eye candy!? I've seen the Cyclamen, Christmas Cactus, Amaryllis, Hyacinth temptations and I've brought home an Amaryllis and Hyacinth - so far. Today I saw my first Poinsettia, which I know I will be unable to resist this year. I'm trying very hard to limit myself to just a handful of holiday plants this year but I don't know how long before I cave in...LOL... I'm sure you can understand that! Enjoy your new plant. It's gorgeous. A Christmas Cactus will forgive you almost anything except for overwatering! They have very small root systems so be very careful with the water jug. Most flowering plants like being a little snug in their containers so don't worry about whether the pot is too small....See Moreldlconsultinginc
