Leaf drop on healthy magnolia plant - help please!

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum (and to gardening in general) and I'm really hoping someone can help me! I have a port wine magnolia plant in a pot on my balcony. In the last week or two I've noticed that it's suddenly begun dropping a LOT of healthy green leaves, especially from the base of the branches near the middle, so the plant is starting to look a bit "hollow". The plant otherwise seems to be doing just fine, and I can't see any evidence of pests or diseases on the plant (although I haven't dug through the soil in the pot).

It was suggested to me that the plant might have too much nitrogen - I give it a soluble plant food once a week, but I've been doing that for months and the problem is only very recent so I'm not sure if nitrogen is the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas about what's wrong with the magnolia, or what I can do to stop the leaf drop? Any help would be very greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Nicole
