help!! Need to order my range hood ASAP!
Comments (11)I owned a Vent-A-Hood for about 10 years in my previous house and found it noisy and hard to clean. I know there are widely varying opinions here so take it for what it's worth. The box that collects the grease was a pain to remove and was very temperamental. Re-assembly after cleaning always required several rounds of back and forth to get rid of horrible scraping noises. In our new kitchen, I went back to baffles with a remote blower and love it. My wife thinks I'm obsessed with cleaning it since just about every time the dishwasher is empty, I pop off the filters and run it through. Our new system is about three times as powerful and quite a bit quieter. Keep in mind however that noise is often related more to ducting than the hood itself but it's nice not having to worry about the blower scraping against the box every time it's removed to be cleaned....See MoreHelp - need ideas for range hood area
Comments (10)Ok, I'm the impatient type...don't want to wait for your answer! I'm going to assume that there are base cabs on either side. Seems to me what would look best is something that treats the whole space between corner and window as one unit. You could simply put a wall cab on either side of the hood you've got (or use a wood cover similar in shape, but not style, to either of the two pictures you showed...but without the two the counter pillars on the second one). The cabinet to the left of the stove would hide the vent in it. The one on the right would be a usable wall cabinet. But if the budget allows and you don't need the wall cabinet space, I'd seriously think about an oversized hood that extended as far as it needed to on either side of the range to encompass the outside vent. A vintage looking one like the Modernaires would be lovely, but other styles, like the one in the first pic above would work. I'd just be careful to keep the hood simple...something that would look appropriate with and not overpower your lovely vintage stove....See MoreHow do I vent my range hood or microwave from my kitchen
Comments (1)Exposed ductwork in an older home can be quite charming. It gives it an evolved over time feel. Or, it can be hidden within the cabinets. Either way, it will have to go straight up and then left to go out of the building. I'd do at least an 8" duct, as that gives you more versatility than a 6" duct. 6" limits the possibilities down the road. Doing 8" now instead of 6" won't increase the cost but a couple of dollars, and you could possibly do a higher BTU stove and vent at some point if that interests you because the infrastructure would already be done. Comments (5)We used a Tornado II by Zephyr. It's an insert that we built a hood around to fit my situation. I saved quite a bit of money by buying my insert directly from an ebay dealer that I bought almost all of my appliances from. (saving-u-money) is his eBay handle. I can provide more info if you want to compare prices. Here's a photo of my hood. Though not completed, you can see how a liner works. You can also download a PDF info from Zephyr that will give you a drawing, schematic, and other info that will show you exactly what you will need to do this. I love my hood. The photo online shows that they've redesigned it a bit. Mine actually looks like the Tornado III, but I know it was a II with 1,000 CFM. FWIW, I love my hood. It's a powerhouse and doesn't blow you out of the water. It's a solid whooshing sound, not whiney and tinney. My brother lives next door about 300' away. (We both have 1.5 acres.) He has called me before to ask, "When's dinner?" because he can smell what I'm cooking. My kitchen vent is away from his house, too. When I've told him that I'm not grilling and I'm cooking inside and not outside, he can't believe it. It has to be this powerful hood.
